Now I'm starving.... in my own home I'd be up and cooking toast, making coffee, watching the telly .... here I've no food (too OCD about the kitchen/fridge to even want to keep food in there) .... and in a small flat you might as well be sitting on the flatmate's bed and eating/drinking and watching telly due to the noise transmission.

    Sharing really, really sucks.

And the bin men come at 7:08 .... big industrial bins for flats under my window.... then the bin men's wagon creaks and groans its way round neighbouring properties until 7:20.

    Still starving........

Nah. I reckon my mate's boss (he worked in a London job centre inthe 1970s)was the scariest boss ever!

Oooh-err missus! Reading that entry, I've just realised he lived in the same road as my uncle, but probably not at the same time....so it doesn't count as extra scary. :(

Must've had a bob or two. Those houses aren't cheap!

Everything was cheap in the 70s, don't you remember? You could buy a mansion on a single wage from working in a pit and iPhones were free etc etc

I haven't seen the horizon prog, but i presume it's about the weird results of the pretty extensive animal diet experiments on calorie restriction and effects on health and longevity.

There's a lot to be said for this (or to be precise, the limited versions of it). I gather radical calorie restriction is like starving yourself into "famine survival mode" where cell repair is upregulated to keep you alive till the other end of the famine, but the downside is wiilpower (you feel starving) infertility and problems maintaining particluar nutrients. The milder versions (intermittent restriction for days on end) sound more promising and realistic and animal experiments have shown similar life extension properties to radical diets.

The two days a week version may have some benefits, and would certainly be easier for humans to attempt. But I'd never recommend a restricted diet to anyone still growing and I'd be very wary of it if somebody was getting treatment for a complex condition. It would make sense to get that sorted first and then get advice.

It's fascinating. I've heard it suggested it's why Seventh day Adventists lived so long- thier diet is drug-free and low or free in animal products and they're encouraged to eat very healthily.

Calorie restriction's obiously a more extreme version. This whole topic might well be lightning in a bottle.

I've had to teach Biology courses which cover some of this stuff at a very basic level. I very much like the direction that Biology education's going right now.

Thanks, that isthe one, and you hit on one of the contradictions in what i have ( briefly) read. I read you should not over indulge on protein on these days but also that the bbc guy had fast day breakfasts if ham and eggs, nit unhealthy but but not low protein. The strongest proponants on the mse thread are low carbers or 'paleo' eaters.

    I need a dummies guide.

Feetilty issues aren't really relevant to me, but endocrine ones are. BUT. If it does work it might have a beneficial impact on mine.

depends who you share with. I would share with one of my uni flat mates again at the drop of a hat. Definitely am not minding sharing woth parent who has been up before us every day this week and let dogs and fhickens out. Parent is an early riser but i am still oversleeping but less abnormally ( e.g. Up at eight this morning).

Surely, no one who was around in the 70s is going to admit they remember them?:cool::cool:

Lir, I'd be very reluctant to suggest fasting to anyone with anything complex being treated.

As you've said yourself, you should get medical advice before applying any of these ideas. And if you find anything that's like a dummies guide, I'd like to hear about it.

Its ok, i will not do anything without talking about it and knowing more. Atm weight is a complicator for me, and needs to go, and couple of years ago nhs dietician agreed that as things stand not much more they can do apart from saying give up calorie hoarding and spread th calories more evenly. Have been doing that this year and piled on more weight. This new complication is probably because of that, so its gone beyond vanity to health concern.

Luckily i know from last blood teststhat my other important health indicators are good, my liver function is excellent, which is a surprise to me, i had though t that was probably going to be next, and no risk of diabetes or anything (which imo is pretty amazing considering the fact of the matter).

My guess is the medical alternative at this stage is the 4/500kcal a day again. Which is ok for me, i cope well on it, i just miss real food and i would rather eat real food of the same calories than than sachets of sweet gloop which are nutrient balanced at that intake. If there is a chance of jump starting my body i would like to try it as an alternative really, even if its after a frw gloop months.

Rather than fasting, I'd tell anybody to look into the Slimming World diet methods. There are people on the other forums that do it, probably threads about it.

The way it works is each day you decide what eating plan type you will use today. They started with a "Red Day" (meat eaters) and "Green Day" (veggies). You could switch and swap at will, so long as you used the points system relevant to what type that day was for the whole of that day. There now seems to be another day type, called Extra Easy.

All foods are attributed with a "syns" value - and you're allowed X syns per day. There are some basic foods you have to eat each day (I think).

But, the best bit about the SW diets seem to be that, armed with the knowledge, you can seek out and scoff "0 syns" foods and they are in abundance.

A few foods are "0 syns" whatever day you are on; others have different syn values depending if you're having a Red day or a Green day (or other).

Then there is a HUGE raft of easy recipes to follow. Proper food stuff.

There's so much information available here, online, etc, that you never have to join or go to a class at all.

All foods you can buy in the shops can be looked up (buy a book of values, ask people on here to PM you specific products, or google for the answers).... so you can literally eat anything, so long as you stick to the rules.

The whole concept of "free/unlimited foods" makes this one a winner. I was looking earlier at an easy recipe where you make creamed rice pudding from pudding rice and tins of Cream of Soda fizzy drink..... apparently it works.

    :)

On red days, most fresh meat is "0 syns". On green days, most rice/noodles/veggies are "0 syns".
