Cheers lir. Spurred on by that thought I went to have a look see where ours is. Not visible from the top of the road, but a very short drive away, so will definitely pop out for a look.

Here's a link if anyone else wants to look theirs up:

As the thread's resident luddite, I'm bemused to say I've come into posession of a Nokia phone that does emails (allegedly). It's the C2-o1.
Got to find out how it all works.

I'm about as dexterous with a phone as a blind baby wearing boxing gloves so I see a long learning curve ahead of me.

Any NPs got any tips about useful sites where I can learn about Android software how to alter settings etc?

I think I already know sites where I can compare costs.

I'm on Asda (Vodaphone) PAYG. I send texts and make calls pretty rarely (yup, sad, I know) and haven't used the internet on a phone before.

I didn't know there were any nokia android phones - are you sure it isn't symbian?

Edit in fact it just seems to be nokia's own S40 OS so not a smart phone at all per se...but that means it is probably more straight-forward to use so probably a good thing.

    Here you go zag:

    One for your phone -
    http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/guides/Nokia_C2-01_UG_en.pdf

p19 for how to use e-mail
    p23 for internet
p27 onwards for settings. To avoid high data costs I tend to use wifi hotspots.

Using Android depends on what version you're on, so you may need to root around a bit. Here's one for version 3.1:
    http://www.vodafone.com/content/dam/vodafone/about/what/devices/manuals/smart_tab/smart_tab_android_users_guide.pdf

There's a reasonable list of free Android apps here, a lot more have been added in the comments section below:
    http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/60-best-free-android-apps-2012-687252

Have a play and see how you get on. Android is pretty straight forward to find your way around. Can't help more as your phone is a bit different to mine.

ETA: have just seen michaels's post on prev page, so you may only need the top one...

I didn't know anything about any beacons. Never heard of them.

    So I looked up "mine".

It seems from the map/link that there's only one beacon - and a handful of lighthouses.

I am 40 miles from the nearest one, 80 miles from the next one.

The map doesn't seem to show any actual beacons at all. But the map is slow loading and flakey.

Edit: And the "beacon finder" is broken.

I'm afraid what I know about these phones I could write on my thumbnail without using small print.

Lots to learn. :D Is there an online idiot's guide?

"Straightforward to use" is deffo a good thing!

A website says the phone's 3g. Can send emails it says but I need to figure out if I can access webmail. Or get on the internet to do that.
it also says that it used OS 40 like you said, michaels.

I used to have the link for a good payg comparison site but it's gone! Anybody know an up-to date one? I 'd like payg with internet ideally but as I rarely spend more than £5 per month I'm not much tempted by contracts or packages that have to be renewed monthly (like giffgaff's goodybags).

I’ve got the 4S at the moment (as I think was mentioned somewhere else on the thread), and once you’ve got used to it, it’s fine.

Anything before that is a nightmare, though :)
