It's odd that thing about LANs going down. My office used to have 8 people on a p2p coax network that never failed. Ever! At home we have about 6 PCs on the LAN, and that never goes down. Switches are very reliable. Server hardware failure is just about imaginable but ever so unlikely. Software is as flaky as you allow it to be.
I used to do sub-contract work at a large PLC. Their LAN never went down. Very occasionally a single PC would have problems that would get fixed rapidly.
The LAN goes down once a week!!!???? Do you work in the public sector, Chewie? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

basically it is a big square containing mostly "normal high street" shops and dept stores. there are a few ludicrous shops in the main bit but not that many. basically it's a bit like being on oxford street but not as bad, and you can drive there (although traffic is bad) so you don't have to carry all your bags home (which is why i go there).
there is a little "spur" off the main shopping centre called the village, which has a house of fraser, and about 40 ridiculous shops which all sell ludicrously expensive luxury nonsense. they must be doing business because they are still there, but they contain the sorts of things that it would be cheaper to buy a flight to another country specifically to go and buy the thing there. i expect it is frequented by london based saudis, qataris and russians who have more money than time.0 -
Took DS to what I thought was a physio appt. Turned out we were down to see the OT - but she's a hand therapist, so just the person to sort out his finger. She had a good look at it - it's improved quite a lot since last week - and gave him 2 exercises to do 10 times each 3 times a day for 10 days, and a number to phone if he's not all back to normal by then.
She also took a look at his arm. There's one kind of rotational movement that she says is the only problem - he's lost about 20 degrees of rotation. She said that while she was the right person for the finger, she wasn't the right person for the arm, so we've got a referral to paediatric physio for that - although the waiting list for physio is much longer than for OT, so we'll have to wait a while. Happy it's going to be treated, anyway.
lir, glad you seem to be OKish. Hope things improve from here.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0 -

Nobody wants me .... still trawling through these houseshare sites ... and they're either student lets, or people who want a housemate aged 20-40, or they want a full-time working professional..... it's tough being old and in a new area
Of all the people I've contacted through those sites, NONE have got back to me.
Chicken and egg really ... job ... house.... get a job you're more able to find a house, but finding a job takes longer than you've got left where you're living.
I didn't really want to look for work until I'd got settled in a place I could rely on staying at.... or, probably, before September anyway (in case we get a summer).
I'm sure something will turn up.... it has to ... and it always has so far.0 -
So, my daddy is gonna buy me a dishwasher as we no longer have hot water to the kitchen sink. (i love my temporary kitchen though). Eventually i want the dishwasher integral in an island, so presumably that means i buy that sort with no proper door now? It will be some time...years even, before it goes into the island, but i dpubt its somethong that needs relacing often? I am thinking miele but not sure. ( i want the flat cutlery tray at the top, nopt the basket at the bottom and that is more important than make to me. )
Any thing else i should be looking at with a dishwasher?0 -

Miele washing machines have a great reputation, but dishwashers less so. Is the cutlery tray at the top to avoid bending down? We have (two) dishwashers with cutlery baskets, and they are no problem to fill. I usually take the basket out to fill it. One architect recommended having the dishwasher raised up on a platform for easy filling.
He also said to have it right by the kitchen table and to store all your most used china etc in it. Then you use some for a meal, return it to the dishwasher afterwards and wash the dirty and clean stuff together, so you have the complete set ready for the next meal. Not very MSE.
You'll pay a premium for built-in compared to free-standing. If it really will be years before you get it built in, I'd be tempted to buy a cheapo free-standing one for now or even a reasonably good one.
http://www.coopelectricalshop.co.uk/Bosch-SMS40C02GB/id-BOS-DWR-SMS40C02GB-W?utm_source=google&utm_medium=basefeed That one should last the best part of 10 years, and it has a knife rack in the top basket. Do you want a full size one or slimline? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

No, not for bending ( though thats helpful and had not thought of it, but for ease of general use, i find the baskets annoying i. The extreme, they get narly and holey i hate them

Its not just jewish y'know, all the best people have two know, when i told kitchen designers i only wanted one they were almost scandalised by the dereliction i was prepared to live in

Thats intersting, why is it more i wonder? I think it will be years.
