Couldn't they give you a warning ??

I dont think it woul have made a difference if they did. Sorry to sound harsh OP butyou hardle sound upset about it which leads me to think that you wernt struck on the job anyway, if this is the case then the company would have got rid of you sooner or later under the reasoning that you turn up to work not just to get paid.
I do hope that it works ou for you though the prospect of living on the breadline is never one that i would enjoy seeing ANYONE on (except gordon brown maybe)The glass is always half full, no exceptions !!:D

Perhaps the OP would rather not divulge that information.
Sorry I just wondered what he did which was so bad. Everyone who's worked in an office has sent the odd personal email and made an order from a site online. Just wondered what he did which was so bad he got the sack with no warning.2008 Comping ChallengeWon so far - £3010 Needed - £230Debt free since Oct 20040 -
The issue wasn't about what I did...more that I'd spent considerable time on the net when I should have been out working.black-saturn wrote: »Sorry I just wondered what he did which was so bad. it sounds a bit odd to me, but surely if your work is all done and up to date your work cannot dismiss you. it sounds a bit trivial to me. especially if it was your first time etc0

That depends what the company IT policy says, I'm afraid. If it makes it very explicit that the net is to be used only for company business, and that any use of the net during working hours will be treated as gross misconduct, then they are probably within their rights to dismiss. Most companies don't have such draconian rules, I am glad to say!Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0

Surely you have to have a Warning first.

No, gross misconduct can be a 1st offence - out of the door situation. Does require an investigation to avoid being classed as unfair dismissal in the event of a tribunal.0
