Quick question on how to organise favourites

That's about it really! I've searched for this, but I can't find the answer - please can you help?

My favourites list is driving me barmy and I can't find a way to fix it! It stores every site I save in alphabetical order - but repeatedly over and over. It saves according to alphabetical placing, but I'm only allowed to save one of each letter. So for eg, if I save Dentist, Trains, Boilers & Youth Hostels - it stops the instant the Y is reached and starts a new list. It currently has 25 groups of alphabetical listings (some quite long) and it's a real eye aching chore to find anything! It's Windows XP, by the way.

Any help would be most appreciated - thanks!

Are you taking about Favorites in Internet Explorer? If so what version are you using?

There should be a setting for organise favories which will let you move them around and delete / rename them.

    C:\Documents and Settings\YOURuserNAME\Favorites

replace the red bit with your user account name for windows

you can see all the favourite links.

if you create directorys you can cut and paste the links how you want them.

Exactly, in the IE7 Favourites pane/window you can simply click and drag the links to wherever and whatever order you wish.

In IE click Organise at the top of the list of Favourites and sort any way you want.

I prefer to use folders, (about 15 in all) ie Ebay, Emails, Shopping etc. Each website I save which falls into a certain category I save within that folder. It means that websites are easier to find, rather than searching a long list.

    Good luck

I do the exact same and have my folders as quicklinks along the top so I don't have to open the favourites folder.

Yes I am. But I should have explained the problem more clearly - sorry. It's the folders that I need help with.

When I first started using the pc, whenever I created a new folder the software would automatically keep re-organising the list of folders into alphabetical order. So, for eg, in the case of the letter C, the list would show: Cats, Cartoons, Christmas, Compact Discs in an organised way. But after a couple of months it stopped doing that and it now lists like this: Bargains, Cards, Egypt, Health, TV, Audio, Debt, Crafts, Photos, Washing Machine, Ansafone, Courses... etc. It organises on the basis of the order that I use the letters of the alphabet (the letter at the start of each new folder name) - if I don't use some letters, it'll just miss those out until it gets to the next lowest in the alphabet that I do use (say T) and if I use a C next, it'll start a new alphabetical list with that. I know I can organise by clicking and draging items into folders, but there's no option to organise the folders themselves into alphabetical order. Now whenever I access my favourites, I have 25 separate alphabetical lists of folders to search through - and it's driving me mad!

Can someone please tell me why the software stopped doing this, but most importantly, how I can fix it? Thanks.

I am not 100% sure I understand. Try this..

start/favourites/right click anywhere in favs and 2nd bottom of the list click sort by name.

I'm not surprised you don't really understand! I've tried hard to explain but I suppose if you've never had this problem, you won't know what I mean! I'm starting to feel that it's only me who's ever come across this one!

Sorry alba, I can't figure out what you mean in your answer either! :rotfl: Could you please explain or could someone else please help? Ta!

Has this problem with Favourites always been there or has it just started happening? If it's just recent you could try 'Restore' to revert to before it started happening.
  • Hi,

    I'm a bit confused as well.

To organise your folders: click favourites, then right click anywhere in the box and click sort by name,

to organise the contents of a folder: open the folder, then right click anywhere within folder and click sort by name.
