Two females here discussing what car my sister should get for her new job. She's narrowed it down to the above. Her requirements are:
Must be cheap to run (Toyota Aygo etc do more mpg but do they cost more in servicing, parts etc - we keep reading in reviews that bits fall off regularly!)
She will be driving 22 miles a day along a fairly straight A road and occasionally at weekends.
As these cars are small must have split rear seat for flexibility
Preferably 5 doors but 3 will do
Low insurance group and tax - she's not driven for while and so has no NCD.
Reliable and not too old - she's looking at 2008/09 models.
Below £6,000 for the actual car.
Which would you choose - and any other suggestions are welcome.

If I were looking I would tend towards the Toyota if I could find one in an acceptable condition/millage/price.
Based on my experience of Toyota rather than the model.
A friend with a repair business also rates Toyota, again not specific to model."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

Daughter has an i10. Nice drive and feels well made. No problems in three years (front brake pads only). Consumption is higher than Hyundai claim and the Aygo is probably more economical, but you get a lot with the i10 for the money.Je suis sabot...0

That's why I would go for the Citroen. Identical car, made on the same line, in the same factory, but there is a group who'll keep the Toyota prices high, because they like the name, and are happy to stump up more for no other good reason.0 -
Depending on spec required the Aygo can be the cheapest of the three. Aygo will have remainder of a 5 year warranty and Toyota dealers are cheapest for servicing.
On a 22 mile run it will do at least 60mpg and I would recommend finding one with aircon.0 -
Maybe a very basic high mileage ex rental.0

My son has an 08 i10 style. We bought it 3 years ago and have never regretted it.
1.1 engine , OK it's not fast or speedy but then again he's not going to get many speeding tickets.
Usual CD radio, fog lamps, all wheel discs brakes, ABS etc..
Does about 45 mpg tatting back and forward to the shops, 50+ on a run but then again wouldn't want to go long distances . He goes to uni at about 90 miles round trip........
Plus points. Heated front seats, good grip in snow. Air con for summer + sun roof, leccy windows on all 4 doors. It's very upright so can get a good load in with rear seats down. ( Took an armchair to the tip!).
5 Year warranty.
Minus points
If you kerb or hit a pot hole it seems to bulge a tyre very easily, must be due to size.
Cornering doesn't feel secure due to height.
Servicing costs can be expensive. 130 and 240 for 1st and 2nd years.
The bottom line is I like driving it (my own car is a Jag XF) as it feels like driving fast without actually doing it. In a word it's fun .
We did look at a Pug 107 but felt it didn't offer as much £ for £.0 -
Citroen.
Don't get the i10, despite how "cool" it is to rave about Korean cars, they're still unpleasant to drive, even more unpleasant to be seen in (if that bothers you.)
Get the Citroen, represents best value for money.

I just got the Citroen C1 and I LOVE it!
Great car to drive, really comfy to sit in and Air Con is a real bonus in this weather. Tax is virtually zero and the car has done 378 miles on the one tank of petrol so far (still have quarter of a tank)!!!!
I had a gas guzzling Rover previously and the difference is astonishing.
Plus the Citroen is a really nippy little thing. A bit slow to pull away out of a junction maybe but a small price to pay for the rest! I'll just have to get used to it I guess0 -
I used to have a C1 as a company car and I hated it, I had to do a lot of stop/start stuff for my job and the resulting mileage was dreadful for a so-called small city car (less than 40mpg)
It was not much better on a long run being very noisy at speeds over 50mph and as I am a bit heafty, it was not very comfortable to sit in for long periods.0 -
Thanks for all the comments. I guess its a case of test drive all of them and see what suits best. We are going to have a look round today so wish us luck.0
