You can't get severe disability allowance and have someone claiming carers allowance for you at the same time, that's just not possible.

I am presuming you mean the SD premium? I get severe disablement allowance (not premium) and my husband, who is my carer, gets carers allowance.

When you say carer rate, I presumed you meant carers allowance? Do you mean the middle rate carer component of DLA?

If your council are not giving you the single room rate due to being on Medium Care component, they may have a policy in place for only those on High Rate Care to receive it. I would ring again though.

Do you mean the middle rate carer component of DLA? - Yes

I am happy with a 1 bed, and get a sofa bed, but as I said before the bungalow prices are cheaper in my area privately for 2 beds than 1. I hope this changes on housing associations.

We have worked it out on the last operation - which I am still recovering from, I need care for 3 months, before I can be left alone at night for a couple of nights per week which is now - some 7 months on.

Its stupid things really, but when I take my pain medication it states that someone should be with me, I have to sign something when I pick it up, saying that when I take the medication that someone responsible will be there. I also need someone to get me to the bathroom if I need a pee in the middle of the night, etc so not just sleeping :P

    Its 7 months since november?
  • you are mixing your benefits up. you cannot get carers allowance paid into your own bank, it goes straight to the carers bank as they claim it not you, so what you must be giving mum and sister is your dla care component. while living with someone you would not be intitled to the severe disability premium of 58.20 , but if you move onto living alone you would then qualify for it as long as nobody is claiming carers allowance for you (NOT the dla care component you give them yourself).
your best bet is to arrange get a benefit check up which you can do via citizens advice or online on the government website.

Sorry, I am getting confused here.

From government website it says the following:

Disability Living Allowance has two parts called 'components':
a care component - if you need help looking after yourself or supervision to keep safe
a mobility component - if you can't walk or need help getting around

I get Higher rate mobility and medium rate care component - Sorry must of got myself and then you guys confused :D I do get care component - I double checked my paperwork also.

You have to consider that you may not always need that extra room though, and it will be deducted off your LHA once it's not needed. So unless you are sure you are going to be needing it for a substantial amount of time, I would carefully consider before you rent privately.

    Oh, most definitely, :D

But for the foreseeable future I will need it, I mean it takes about 1 year to fully recover from an operation I receive, 3 operations, thats 3 years.

After the 3 years I don't know If I need 1 room or 2, or I may have a family and need 3? who knows how things will work out, but as I said for the foreseeable future it appears 2.

Oh, another thing, if I get offered lets, say a house, thats really nice, which I can take, I could switch it for a bungalow right?

If you mean through a tenancy swap scheme, look here http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/homeandcommunity/councilandhousingassociationhomes/councilhousing/counciltenants/dg_188555

For private housing, while not impossible, could be more complicated and you would need permission off the LL.

Who are you suggesting is going to offer you a house, much less a bungalow?

I really think that you need to be looking at renting a flat in the private sector - a 2 bed if you can afford to pay the extra or otherwise a 1 bed with a sofa bed.

    ETA

The LHA 1 bed rate for Portsmouth or Fareham is £115pw ( £498pcm). As you can see from Rightmove there's plenty of 1 bed flats available in your area and even some 2 beds. (Obviously they won't all be suitable for you and the won't all accept LHA.)

    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/find.html?locationIdentifier=REGION%5E1089&maxPrice=500&minBedrooms=1&maxBedrooms=2&radius=10.0

As a comparison, you can see that you would have to pay at least £770pcm for a 2 bed bungalow and there are precisely 3 available in your area. As the 2 bed LHA rate is £138 pw ( £598 pcm) you have to see that your plan isn't viable, even if you were to be eligible for the 2 bed rate, which I doubt.

    http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-to-rent/find.html?locationIdentifier=REGION%5E1089&maxPrice=800&minBedrooms=2&maxBedrooms=2&displayPropertyTy

Sorry to be negative but you need to be more realistic.

I am currently living in a house with my mum and sister, however due to my disability I can't get upstairs for 3 months and resulting in my bed being downstairs near enough in the kitchen, I end up with no privacy.

I currently need a 2 bed bungalow due to the fact that my disability means I need care best part of the year, and someone will need to stay over for at least 3 months until I am able to put weight on my legs.

Due to longer waiting lists for operations that are not life threatening, I am able to make it up the stairs where I live so finding me a home is not on the highest of priorities at the moment.

So are you sleeping downstairs, as stated earlier in your OP, or ae you upstairs, as stated later in the same post?

I'm sure if you can make it upstairs you can make it to the toilet!
