Simple & classic sounds lovely - who knows, you may start a trend ;)

Seriously, don't be railroaded into having a "themed" wedding if that's not your thing.

We had a "Blackpool" wedding because it was our wedding, we live in Blackpool and that's where we got married! Everything was an added extra to those facts - Town Hall for ceremony, hiring a heritage tram, Promenade hotel reception, rock for favours, famous Blackpool attractions for table names, even down to the Illuminations being switched on that night which was a bonus!

We don't really have a theme...! At times I've felt like maybe I should and I'm slightly worried that there won't be something pulling all the aspects together but I think it'll work out ok. Also, the room our reception is in isn't exactly a blank canvas so I'm worried that anything too modern will clash with the decor that's already there. I think a vintage theme might work well but since that's really not me it'll probably just look a bit try hard!

I just think that there'll be some lace (including my dress!), some pretty flowers and maybe candles for the evening...I'm just going for a 'nice and pretty' look!

ps rainbowdrops that wasn't aimed at you. I'm sure your country flowers were lovely - I was talking about the magazines

No worries, like I said, I didn't follow a theme or follow wedding mags. I just picked things I liked or that were cheap (eg seasonal flowers were cheaper than roses or lillies!) :)

I'm 62 but a rebel at heart, I suggested my daughter and partner to have a fancy dress wedding, it didn't go down well.

So, when my time comes and Im no longer of this mortal coil I dont want this 'wear bright clothes' business, I want this 'fancy dress' funeral. And I will be floating around and taking notes, anyone not in fancy dress, well I will haunt them for some while.:D

I have left instructions to this effect too.:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • be yourself, don't worry about the need to have a theme or not.

I got engaged in January and have bought a few wedding magazines since then. In the ones I have looked through, you are almost guaranteed that at least 50 per cent of the 'real weddings' featured will have
    - a 'vintage' theme
    - old crockery/china hired or collected from somewhere
    - birdcages everywhere
    - quirky signage
    - a sweet table
    - quirky vases with country flowers in
    - a London bus to take them to the reception
    - wellies
    - a table with old pictures, a typewriter etc on to write notes for the bride and groom
    - a photo booth.

Apologies as I'm sure many people on this forum are having one or all of these things, all these things seem to be very 'in' at the moment but it is all so samey samey.

    Be yourselves.

:D thaats practically my wedding haha, although I been imagining this stuff long before I bought a mag. Its not quite as full on, but I was going for a 1940's era kind of thing.

On the few occasions that we have been asked what our theme is, we have said that the theme is 'getting married'.

At best, our 'colour theme' is blue-ish...bridesmaids in navy, invites etc in bright blue, decorations are multicoloured.

I don't anticipate any of our guests even realising that there isn't a theme :)

I gave up on wedding magazines a few months after we got engaged, full of overpriced nonsense and as trolleydolley says, you could describe the real life weddings without seeing them. Lots of lovely features but each month the same (of course only wedding geeks know that bird cages etc are trendy, the majority of guests may well just be confused about having so many cages around!:rotfl:)

I'm having a theme, but only because everyone I know seems to be getting married this year and I wanted ours to be slightly different. Plus I LOVE Autumn (OH couldn't have cared less as long as it isn't tacky so I got to choose what I liked) so it made sense to have an Autumn themed wedding. Otherwise I would have stuck to colours, all the other weddings I've been to this year haven't had a theme.

Oh yeah, I bought two wedding magazines when I got engaged. When I realised they were almost identical I decided to stop buying them and come up with my own ideas.

I love this thread! I didn't have a theme either and I actually felt guilty as if I wasn't putting enough effort in!

In the end, if anyone asked I said Blue & Bling as the BM's dresses and chair covers were blue and I chucked a load of crystals over everything that didn't move (think tables, bouquets, my shoes, my BM's etc etc!).

And I think it looked great!

Same here! And nobody will bat an eyelid as I am well known among my family and friends for being a vintage loving type, our house is full of shabby chic and mismatched stuff so it's very 'us'. there isn't a theme as such, but I guess it will all be very vintage, retro etc with a little art deco and French influence (the wedding is on Bastille Day :D )

I'm the opposite of most of you. I hate colour schemes, they just leave me cold. :o We'll be having lots of colours :)

We have picked burgundy as a colour and our invites have a burgundy rose on, table cards have a burgundy mulberry rose on and our bridal party flowers will be roses (ivory and burgundy) but thats it as far as a theme goes.
