You won't take the time to find alternative insurance when the orignial insurance lapses, then your dog/cat gets sick, your house burns down, and you kill somebody with your car. Then you will bleat on how it's unfar you had insured losses, and why didn't they continue the insurance instead.
How can I cancel auto renewal if I don't know about it? Thats why I renew all insurances in April, so I dont forget to renew. thanks for your useless advice though, hope it made you feel better0 -
If the policy is set to auto renew then they will do this if you don't tell them not too.
Unfortunately I was unaware of the auto renewal, it was purchased online through a comparison website, I have never come across it. Due to ill health and house move I no longer have the policy which due to those, I didnt read. Well lesson learnt. Thanks.0 -
Thanks to everyone who has posted helpful advice. I have spoken to MoreThan who have said that they will give me a full refund ( otherwise I will get a pro rata refund) if I can get them a doctors note confirming my medical history, and how this affects my ability to manage such affairs.0

For some people though if they didn't have auto renewal they would no longer be insured which is potentially far worse. Not so much for you but car insurance. Did you take out a policy elsewhere? This is why you should read the paperwork which comes with the policy.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Sorry meant to add, that for the first time I have used an insurance broker this year to help me manage my insurance policies. I had previously thought this an expensive thing to do but actually found them no more expensive than dealing direct myself with insurers. The person I dealt with is aware of my situation and has taken the stress out of finding suitable policies for me. If anyone else is in similar situtaion to me I can't recommend this method enough, I am happy to recommend the company I dealt with if anyone wishes to PM me.0

I understand that it can be useful, and years ago when I was always on deployments would have welcomed such a thing. Yes when my car, house, pet insurances were due for renewal last month I had a broker arrange policies and when the renewals are due they will come out to my house and see me to reorganise. They are aware of my situation and have even gone as far as making me the least you need to know for each policy, and highlighting all the important bits. They will also speak with my parents or my local veterans centre if I am unable to. So very happy with this as it has taken all the stress from me and I know its all taken care of.0 -

You don't have to tick every condition. You do tick to say you accept the ts + cs, so don't tick it if you haven't read them and agree them!0

Some funny responses here to this thread.
Ive just fallen foul to this practice with Admiral Insurance who took £950 off my credit card in June, I didn't receive any renewal paperwork - nor did I receive anything to say the money had been taken (like a card payment receipt). I haven't even received the new policy certificate, instead I received a letter from Barclaycard advising I've missed my monthly payment (they took the money from my Barclaycard which I rarely use and has/or did have a zero balance)... so Ive been fined for missing the payment on a balance I was unaware of.
I knew my insurance was due for renewal and got it all sorted with another insurer... because while I was go comparing my moneysupermaket meerkat, Admirals quote was not far off the £850 I paid in 2011 - and with other insurers at the £650 mark, it was a no brainer.
I don't recall "selecting" auto-renewal during on the old policy... although I have no doubt it was probably hidden away in the T's and C's, 52.4 pages ofwhich I didn't read.
Obviously, this is a worth while service which prevents the forgetfull from driving around uninsured. However, it would be courteous for the insurer to call the customer and ensure it is ok to take money from their previous payment method. After all, we are living in tough times and someone who was able to pay all £850 of their car insurance last year, may not be in the same financial situation 12 months later. They may even wish to pay in installments. Its a 2minute telephone call.
Finally, as the insurance company is doing the decent thing and auto renewing their customers, it would be nice if they were to offer a reasonable renewal price. Admiral took £850 off me in 2011 and after another years no claims bonus, another year of trouble free motoring... they did not auto renew me with the similar price of £800 which was offered through the price comparison sites... no they decided to renew me at £950.
Thanks very much.0
