If the policy is set to auto renew then they will do this if you don't tell them not too.0

Common these days for them to renew until you cancel, BEFORE the new policy is due to start.
Cancel after and they can and usually do add an admin fee. The sooner you contact them the better.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
my insurance tried this as well luckily the payment card is one I no longer use so they couldnt take the money ...... WHY CANT THE INSURANCE OMBUDSMAN PUT A STOP IMMEDIATELY TO THIS PRACTISE AND THEN LETS HAVE A CLAIM BACK UNFAIR ADMIN CHARGES WAR :money:0

They can do it because you agreed to it when you took out the policy.
The FOS support this, better to have a few unhappy people who don't read their policy wording than a bunch of uninsured drivers on the road0 -
And the admin charges (up to £50) have been decreed fair, whether by FOS or another official body I'm not sure0

But what did you suppose the phrase "Automatic renewal" meant??
I understand that it means the policy will be automatically renewed every year without you having to do anything / get involved / know about it???
It's a ridiculous way to manage money but you DID sign up to it0 -

The FOS has no remit to set rules. That is left to the regulator. Auto-renewal is generally favoured as more benefit. The only ones that lose out are the ones that don't read their renewal letter. The standards require the firm to make it clear in their letter what to do next if you do or do not wish to renew. If your letter didnt state that then the FOS will typically side with you in a complaint. If it does state it and you didnt bother then the FOS will typically side with the firm as it is not the firms fault you ignored it.And the admin charges (up to £50) have been decreed fair, whether by FOS or another official body I'm not sure
It was in the FOS publications in their example cases which they had reviewed. The complaint was about the £50 charge. They ruled in favour of the firm as the firm was able to show that the charge was documented and in place at commencement and was fair for the level of work done.
Some people dont like auto-renewal. Some have been saved by it (and we have seen posts on this board from them). Others would have been saved if they had it and others dont really care one way or the other. The only time you will have a problem with auto renewal is if you dont follow the instructions on the letter.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Lets be honest, if you don't take the time to work out the renewal date and cancel in time with auto renewal. You won't take the time to find alternative insurance when the orignial insurance lapses, then your dog/cat gets sick, your house burns down, and you kill somebody with your car. Then you will bleat on how it's unfar you had insured losses, and why didn't they continue the insurance instead.0 -

Just me thinking yes then. There are a few points though. Your old policy should confirm it would autorenew, and under what circumstances. You should have received a renewal offer about two weeks before, with a clear price, and details on who to contact if you didn't want to renew. If they didn't, you should expect a full refund. Why don't you want to renew, eg, if you have cover elsewhere, you may well get a full refund.0
