i didnt say they did but it would be nice if they helped out

and like i say some dont even thank

I agree here, I always thank people for entering comps. I tend to post advice more than comps, but I have posted the odd few. That does get my goat when people only join to say they have won and they haven't even thanked the poster until afterwards. Rude people annoy me.
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T

Even though I am friends with Di on facebook and have turned to her a few times when in need of advice - I have to say I was pretty offended. It does make us "MSE-ers" out to be all bad. Even though it was said that SOME don't contribute - how are promoters going to single those out? They won't - they'll take the forum as a whole and it's gives us an even bigger bad name than we already have thanks to some people!

I like to think I contribute, not as much as I'd like to - not enough hours in my day to do anything more than I do now, but even I feel guilty sometimes when I have a good win.

On the subject of greed - what it means to one means something else to others. My wins total over £12000 for just over two years of comping - I don't think I'd ever stop though. I love getting little (or big ;) ) things through the door that I can surprise my children or family with. Still hoping for a nice holiday but my time will come. What I don't agree with is people winning 3 ipads, selling them, then entering for more!! But that's my opinion!

And if you think this thread is bad - you should see some of the things said on Facebook over certain competitions. Or competition winners. It really shows the "dark side".

How do you win so much? Please give me some tips :rotfl:

I don't mind people selling stuff. I get annoyed when someone wins 3 ipads or any prize for that matter, then enters to win more. That is greedy. Similar to a lot of the hourly comps where people can win several times. I would be happy to win once then give someone else a chance. That's just me.

Blogs are pointless ramblings of people with much to say about nothing much so they pad it out with anything even slightly related.

As far as MSE is concerned and comps...how many times have you seen a site or company owner try to post a comp here innocently and be told they can't? The ENTIRE point of comps is promoting themselves or their service or product...and if you can find a bigger, better place to get a back link from to your site I'll be surprised...a link from here is GOLD in many ways but mainly for Google and other ranking purposes because MSE is a very busy and high ranking, relevant source for a link. This is without the actual visitors from the link itself of any sharing which is common.
This is why links are banned from companies themselves...it would be a free for all and mot all would be good links, which is why some are banned too.

I dislike blogs, most of them are people busking on the internet for pennies and freebies by talking something that MSE would censor if I typed it...they are personal opinions presented as facts in most cases.

IF you enter a lot of comps and stuck to the rules and even if you win a ton of stuff....that's your business. No-one elses. Don't let one person's opinions make you feel wrong for what you do, sharing, not shaing, giving answers (which we don't if the owner asks us not to as regulars will know)...all up to us individually and harming no-one else.

This blog entry effected me in the same way a man burping in a restaurant near me would, I'd consider it ignorant and rude but ignore it and get on with enjoying myself with no more thought given to it at all.

    Chill people. ;)

Lady Di was clearly feeling defensive after feeling got at the other day here. She answered someone's question and in so doing promoted her on blog/site or whatever. She got a gentle warning about self promo, and then got huffy about it. Next - surprise, surprise - she attacks our forum. Bless 'er.

I love this forum, it's made a big and positive impact on my life since I found it; but where three people gather, you will find four opinions. We shouldn't get so worked up re the unwritten rules:

    1) Thou shalt thank every post
    2) Thou shalt not admit to trying to win a prize to sell
    3) Thou shalt start every comp post with 'I did search first - honest guv'

    And so on.

I'm not getting at anyone. I'm just saying we've all got our own views on the rights and wrongs of things. But it is wrong to use nasty names, like calling people greedy, and it's not just her who has done this. We shouldn't try to make others feel guilty for not using the site the way they think it should be used.

Sometimes it comes across bullying. It's not intended that way, but it is nonetheless. I even saw it the other day on someone's IWIWIW post, when they were celebrating their first ever win.

We're not the comping police. Hold whatever opinions you like, but allow others to see it differently if they choose - without having to constantly justify and defend what they do.

Even with those who don't contribute, none of us know their reasons. I'm convinced that if the squabbling stopped more people would feel comfortable to post, thank, etc.

I've gotten to know one 'lurker' here fairly well. I know why he no longer contributes to this forum, and his reasons are legitimate, in my opinion. I don't imagine he's the only one in that position.

I don't suppose Martin loses sleep over who does and doesn't thank him for his advice. He puts it out there, and I'm sure likes to think that many people make good use of his tips and stuff. We should be the same, in my humbles.

Less accusations and more comping please

See my post back that way <
........at least they are posting to thank the poster they don't need to do that, I'm sure many don't.

MSE could appear quite 'cliquey' to newbies, if I didn't know better I'd probably be put off joining at first glance.

But like I say once they have made the first step by registering to thank for a win they may go on to use the boards and not just the comping ones - that can only be a good thing.

None of the problems Di has brought up are new-the lurkers who never contribute and just take answers, don't thank, never post comps themselves, the people who enter for anything and everything and then moan when they win a year's worth of dog food and don't have a dog etc etc If you go back ten or twelve years and look at URC (Uk rec competitions) on news groups archieves you'll see exactly the same complaints -and that news group was the busiest resource at the time. I think some people are awfully thin skinned by assuming comments about some compers means all compers too.

As for the amount of prizes....yes it does sound a lot to those new to serious comping but I know people who've comped seriously for twenty or forty years -and in the past pickings were better as before the internet became commonplace people entered mainly by postcard or entry form and often needed to compose a tie-breaker so more effort was required than just clicking on roboform or copying an answer instead of researching it. People would swop entry forms and every supermarket always had a selection to choose from.More work but a smaller pool of entrants . I think most compers from say ten years ago will agree they won more back then than now so Di's figures sound reasonable to me.

I've never comped seriously but my prizes would come to at least £30K -and I know compers who have won two or three cars and several holidays in a year (oh to have the knack of writing brilliant tie-breakers) so obviously their's would be far higher.
