Competitions Discussion Thread Part 17

PS. also setting up separate email address, separate FB and Twitter account are the must....
A word of warning... a separate Facebook account is convenient, as a lot of FB comps ask you to share on your timeline, which is probably not what your friends are interested in. But it is against FB rules to have 2 accounts, and if they find out they may delete both accounts. It has happened to people here.
Good luck :beer:0 -
So, I wondered what people thought about scrapping the discussion thread and Compers Arms, and instead adding a Discussion Board to the forum. That should keep IWIWIW for posts about wins, and would give a clear and obvious place for people to ask questions, chit-chat, or anything they wanted.
What do others think? And should I have written this on IWIWIW? Here it will soon be pushed back and therefor will probably not seen by that many compers? Which will kind've validate what I'm saying
I think people aren't replying just to make the pointSeriously though, you have a point but personally I much prefer the discussion thread because I can subscribe to it & skim the contents in my email each day. I very rarely see the threads in IWIWIW as I only really go there to post thanks, or occasionally to check if my name has appeared as I like knowing it was worth posting a comp
So to me the best solution would be for more people to sign up to the discussions thread. But I fully expect I am in a minority (this is normal :rotfl: ).
As for why questions here go unanswered, I haven't noticed it that often but I haven't been specifically looking. Perhaps becasue the same questions get asked multiple times & people get tired of answering, or often just because it's not particularly of interest to the people who might be able to answer. We all have many calls on our time (entering competitions, posting competitions, looking for competitions... :rotfl: ) so I guess answering comps questions isn't always a high priority.0 -
I was thinking about where people ask questions here, and I don't think this works as well as it should.
Questions can appear anywhere, on the main competition Board, on IWIWIW, on the discussion thread and I assume also in the Compers Arms.
I have tried a couple of times asking a question on the discussion thread, but they went unanswered, and from what I've seen, this happens quite a lot. When people ask something on IWIWIW they are much more likely to get a reply.
I think this is because a question written on a thread gets pushed back too quickly. It's also hard to follow different questions written on the same thread. I suspect that this why people use IWIWIW for this. There people open a new thread each time, and follow-up posts are added to that individual thread. It's easy to follow, and doesn't get pushed back so quickly.

I would definitely be in favour of a seperate board for discussions/queries!
Gives people more chance of a response and specific help, helps people with similar questions find some help without having to repeat other peoples' questions.
Obviously, a lot of people (especially new impatient compers) don't read through here to find their answers because it's such a long-winding thread, and I'd personally contribute and help people more if it was just a seperate board.

hiya Blulu, it's been asked before & discussed a long time ago from what i remember & nothing came of it,
i subscribe to this thread so's can always check for updates & or questions mainly about mag comps/puzzler etc & agree with
slbhill about being able to just skim through the posts & just answer/reply to the ones you wantplease be a responsible pet owner & spay/neuter your pets, too many strays & not enough homes for them sadly.0 -

I can absolutely see where you and Sibhill are coming from. Clearly this method works fine for seasoned compers who are used to it, and know what they're looking for.
However, I genuinely do think it would be better for the forum as a whole to switch to discussion board. To illustrate the point, I posted my question here and I am pleasantly surprised that I did get a few replies - thanks guys. But around the same time, someone posted a question on the main board that was moved here. That question was almost definitely seen by many more compers, and certainly got more replies. Then that whole thread was moved to the discussion board, which bumped my question far back, where only those who glance at every question would be likely to see it.
I see this time and time again here. I don't think it's because people don't want to respond to what others ask. I think it is because fewer people look at the discussion board, or at least they don't look regularly.
If we tested it, and asked a question here, then a couple of weeks later asked the same question on IWIWIW, I bet more people would read and repy on the latter. And not because people don't want to help, just because it's an easier system to use on that board than on this thread.
I might do my own test and ask about this again on IWIWIW at some point. Be interesting to compare the responses.
I hope you know that I don't mean anything negative to you or Sibhill. I'm always very appreciative of all of you guys who post these fab comps for us, and do a lot more besides.I am brave, I am bruised

I'm not scared to be seen
I make no apology

hi, yes, i do agree to a certain extent blu, anything that's posted on main comps board will get more replies/looks/comments,
it was the same when the reg comps monthly (ppd used to do before they took it off) peeps would post the comps in the thread but not many visited it if they weren't subscribed to the thread then if by mistake the comp was posted on main, loads of thanks/answers etc were added, sometimes same with postal/texts, if a comp was posted that was relatively low cost entry ie: 25/50p & a high valued prize the comp would get again loads of thanks/relpies etc, as soon as it was moved to correct thread or if it's posted in correct thread only the reg viewers of that thread will thank/enter etc
what i'm trying to say isanything that's posted on main will always get more views/replies,
it would be good if your idea (or should i say the idea
could be done, tbh i see lots of great ideas posted in this thread to help the boards & the same ones sometimes over & over again but nothing seems to come of them,
so it's a case of just keeping subscribed to the thread for me unless you might miraculously help change the way things are always done on here, which would be good.please be a responsible pet owner & spay/neuter your pets, too many strays & not enough homes for them sadly.0 -
[your idea (or should i say the idea
]
Definitely THE idea, that way I don't get the blame if it happens and is a disasterBut I also take your point about it not being easy to change stuff. X
