I've had a chargeback within the past 3 years on my private and on my business account and defended them both with proof of postage.

I don't think 2 change backs on sales of several thousand is too bad and when asked we do always suggest on here that pops are kept for a minimum of 180 days

Both were too high feedback buyers.

OK, so some of the business related stuff I wrote is irrelevant! Read instead - There are risks in selling anything online. Sometimes you just have to factor in these costs.

Unfortunately being a private seller doesn't make you immune to chargebacks.

I'm glad I'm not a business seller and feel for all of you who make a living from it. You really do need to know your stuff and protect yourselves from all angles. This chargeback thing is just the latest in a long line of profit cutting scams that could really damage a business using Ebay. I'm pleased that it hasn't happened to you more often but feel saddened that such practices by dishonest buyers are bound to increase; the loophole means it's virtually impossible for them to be 'found out' and the only penalty if Ebay step in is to suspend their account. It's hardly discouragement if you can simply open a new one with new details and start it all again.

I don't need to say it, selling on Ebay will become unattractive. It is becoming unattractive now. It's just getting worse.

It doesn't seem much better for the private seller either, and maybe it hits us harder in a way as we have no way to offset our losses via tax etc. Simply put, they take our items for free and we pay the postage for them.

Maybe I'm just unlucky, as I don't think that in nine years of being a member on Ebay I've sold more than maybe 50 items. So getting this chargeback was a shock and has made me angry.

At the end of the day, the banks who initialise the chargeback don't question it, and Paypal don't question it... no-one stops it. So it will continue.

Something does need to be done about it.

All this fuss, all these messages of warning being sent, all this talk of conspiracy.

All this can be prevented if the sellers keep their proof of posting.

That's all! Not a mystery, not a secret and in fact Paypal even tell you this.

We mention the necessity of retaining POP's for at least 180 on this thread

You should know by now common sense and personal responsibility don't have a place in a thread like this.;)

I take it that you people don't have a problem with chargeback fraud?

I guess that's what makes this country great!

If you keep the POP then no you won't. It's not rocket science and very well highlighted here and on Paypal. But there are always those who like to blame everyone else.

As a general comment I wonder if we are all guilty of encouraging the nanny state now, none of us able to do anything unless someone holds our hand and walks us through it.

WE've had threads demanding that paypal should warn every seller on every sale not to accept paypal on collection. We have had threads where people have insisted that the Post Office should spend time discussing every single item we post to ensure we don't accidentally use a service that doesn't cover our goods. Now we have suggestions that sellers should be warned all the time to keep POPs for months.

So basically we want a set of rigid rules, like a pathway where for every sale we have to read a set of exclusions and warnings, or maybe watch a video, tick to say we understand, and then move on to the next video. Only once we have confirmed we understand that we know what we are doing should we be allowed to send the item.
