Our posts crossed there. Paypal told me it was their bank not giving Paypal money so I am still confused as to why I have to prove it was posted as they left feedback and then I won't owe them the £3 and as the buyer is still buying from eBay almost daily using Paypal are they getting that money? Was it just my money they didn't get? And they said they cannot cross reference the transaction with eBay feedback, I thought eBay owns paypal? So confusing for my already banging head..

Thank you for replying so quickly. As a private seller I haven't had many problems, this is the first chargeback I've had. I had no idea they had that long, I think I will do the accept liability option as I am not really going to worry too much over £3 but explain my side in the comments part, is this the best option?

Don't accept liability - you get charged!
I had a buyer who paid twice by mistake, and did a chargeback on one of the payments, when I accepted liability I got charged £7!

The bloke from Paypal said I have 30 days to give them proof of postage or £3 will come out my Paypal balance. I'm not too hung up about losing £3 but they have bought LOTS of items after mine so wondering is it just me or all of us!

I'm not going to accept liability on it. I have no response really so going to wait for it to close unless I can magic the receipt back.

I agree with EndlessStruggle in that I also think that the buyer received the book.

Add to this the fact that the reversal is for unauthorised activity and not for goods not delivered, and I think that either the buyer simply can't remember ordering the book, hence they don't recognise the payment, or they are totally unaware of the reversal and it's a screw up by their card issuer.

Thought is not evidence. It matters not what is thought!

The chargeback may be for a number of reasons and the account holder may not be aware.

As the op doesn't have proof of posting, which would have covered her, then it's immaterial if anyone thinks the buyer has the item or not.

A contract lawyer on local radio said it would take him 3 months to decipher paypals and e.bays interlocking terms and conditions contracts, his opinion was paypal got the cake and to eat it and you get the bill and no cake.

I don't have the proof of postage as I was under the opinion that once they left feedback they had the item and it was all over no reason to keep the proof of postage. But l know now. I'm just glad it was only £3.

BIZARRE! You know, exactly the same thing happened to me today. Same circumstances, and same email, with Paypal asking for my proof of posting for an item sold in January. Also found out this morning, they slapped this on my account since last night. Coincidence? Hope so!

I called them and they told me that unless I can provide the proof of posting, I lose. I did point out that the buyer left positive feedback, but that's 'not enough for the bank'. I would have thought that there was more porrf that the buyer recieved the item through the feedback, than there was through my proof of posting rewciept, but there you go. Crazily I did have the proof of posting until two or three weeks ago. I threw it out assuming it was no longer needed. I wish Paypal and/or Ebay set out some nice simple plain English terms which had included the 'keep your proof of postage for six months'. I don't have the time to trawl through the pages of guides they write. Bad enough finding the relevent help page for yourself sometimes!!!!

So, until I pay Paypal the £8 they want I cannot buy anything else it appears. Had no mention of charges anywhere, just a big red 'negative balance' notice on my account.

My opinion of Paypal had slid down rapidly, there is no protection for the small time private seller.

I guess that all I can do is contact the buyer and hope they're unaware and honest enough to sort this out at their end.

Edit: In my case it's a week shy of four months. I swear, I will never throw out a postage reciept for an Ebay sale again, regardless of how 'smoothly' things have gone. I had no idea that this could happen to us so long after the sale, it seems so impossibly unfair.

Oh dear, this does not seem fair at all,so glad I left e-bay and paypal, the odds are stacked against you as a seller, seems like another seller ripped off!!!

Why would they do a cash refund if they have the item?and left feedback?I thought once they left feedback, that was it?Surely they have to return the item? This does not seem correct, another e-bay thief?

It seems that the banks are behind this one. Whether the buyer has told the bank it's fraudulent, the bank has decided that it's fraudulent, or the buyer has overspent their account and the bank want their money bank, who knows, but it's one of the three. I suspect the second one myself, although the why's are a mystery.

I would be mortified if a private seller contacted me and told me my bank had done that to them.

Couldn't agree more!! :rotfl:This has concreted in my decision not to sell anything with Fleabay again, just too much hassle and getting ripped off from all angles isn't my idea of making a few pennies!!!

Yet Paypal were so good when I needed to make a claim for purchases not recieved.... grrrrh!
