Sorry Figment, but I have to disagree with you - we buy loads of WD/samsung hdds, and have to say they are noy in retail pacjaging, just in the antistatic bags. If you have one, go the the manufacturer's website and check it out.

This doesn't always apply to HDDs in external enclosures either, WD does give longer warranty, but not sure of others.

That is the line that confirms that yr hdd is bad. The report also tells you what it tried to fix, and also the amount of used and free space.

This will come with a 3 yr warranty - put my life on it!! http://www.ebuyer.com/173804-samsung-hd103sj-spinpoint-f3-1tb-hard-drive-sataii-7200rpm-32mb-cache-hd103sj

You should ignore ebuyers offer for extended warranty as it is just doubling up

From the date of manufacture, yes? Any idea when that would've been?

Presumably I don't need any extras- it just is a straight swap so to speak?

Pretty much: disconnect power and data cables, undo a few screws*, slide the old drive out and plop the new one in.

All that's left then is to install Windows on it.

*May or may not be present.

Sure - it usually printed on the drive; I have just tested this on a foil wrapped samsung hard drive in stock - effectively confirms what I said and also gives you the info to when the warranty expires - so my life should be safe:)

Without jumping too far ahead of myself- i have a "system image" on the HDD that I got delivered today- how do I get that onto my new hard drive when it comes? Will I still need to use my windows CD as well?

Sorry for all the questions- just so happens I've been off work but due back tomorrow so trying to get my head around things while I have a chance.

I dunno. What did you make the image with?

The back up tool on windows 7-it is the standard one that comes with the computer and came up with all the error messages prompting me to back up or lose data. It asked to back up or to copy a system image
