Drives of higher storage density are often quicker. Don't worry - you'll doubtless find something with which to fill it.0

So you have (roughly) 670 gig available on that drive. Add another 250gig(ish) for the extra capacity of the new HDD. That's without taking into account the external HDD purchased todayHow do I add a signature?0 -
Most HDD's (eg Samsung (now Seagate), and WD have 3 year warranty from date of manufacture - this doesn't apply if bought as part of a system where the PC manufacturer warranty applies.
It may be too late for this, but I would have checked the Chkdsk report which the OP obviously missed (not unreasonably). This can be found at controlpanel\administrative tools\event viewer\windows logs\application, but may be easier to follow this: http://janetalkstech.com/2009/windows-tip-of-the-day-viewing-your-chkdsk-report
This will tell you what was or is wrong with yr hard drive. I suspect from what you’ve reported that the drive maybe in terminal decline, but a worthwhile experience to look-up the report.0 -
Haha yes, I think I'm well enough catered for. When new, it worked well and was quick, so I'll go with 1TB and treat it to a slight upgrade0

I haven't ordered yet- if there is a manufacturer offering a 3 year one for a similar price I'm open to suggestions? Will hold off ordering til later tonight anyway. I need some ben & jerrys to console myself with before making another big purchase.0

4 KB in bad sectors
Though it may not seem like much, the simple fact that Windows picked up on this means there are no more 'spare' sectors left for the drive to use. Sector reallocation is normally completely transparent to both the OS and the end-user.
Personally I'd want to replace it as soon as humanly possible.0
