Thanks, not news I had hoped for, but at least we've tried to see if was salvageable

So next step then- any recommendations for a new HD? Obviously quite disappointed at how long it lasted and don't fancy having to keep replacing it.

It was a 750 so presumably same size or a 1TB but as mentioned, I'm not a huge user, no "work" just play stuff really.

Can I still use it in the mean time? Only for email/web- would it damage anything else by doing so?

Moving parts not separated by a near-vacuum always wear out eventually. You can run it into the ground if you want to. ;)

I just meant until new one comes-probably only be a few days - just don't want to do any more harm.

How about this- I really know nothing about good/bad/cost so would appreciate any thoughts. I will order ASAP and hopefully can get it up and running by weekend.

Almost any 3.5" SATA unit will do. These are better value for money though:

And relatively reliable ( as much as can be expected?)

What about the warranty 3 years for £18 is it worth it? I don't tend to bother with warranties.

Relatively. And I don't bother with extended warranties either.

It's amazing how much faith one puts in total strangers on the internet! Thanks for your help, shall probably just order the £70 one.

I don't bother with extended warranties either. Instead I put all the money I didn't spend on extended warranties into a savings account, with a view to using it to repair/replace anything that fails within the 'extended warranty' period. I've not dipped into it in 3 years :)

That has always been my attitude as well Figment, although I did purchase one for our TV. I've never bothered with anything else, and my preious computers have lasted several years so have easily saved more than the cost of this HD.

Is there any added benefit in going for 2TB by the way- for the extra £15? I've got photos and some music, OH plays some games on there but mostly facebook type ones. Mainly it's used for internet stuff and of coure I want to be quick and reliable

Only really of benefit if you need that much disk space (almost 3x the size of the current disk)

How much of the current 750gig one is used (right click on the drive in Windows Explorer ('Computer'), click properties)?
