Having read up on it I'm not sure Naturalisation applies to me because I was born to British parents and entered the UK as a child. Therefore my British citizenship is automatic unless I do something to forfeit it such as join the diplomatic services of Canada.

Naturalisation seem to apply to people who are here and then gain the right to stay such as marrying a British spouse etc.

Did your parents not have to naturalise you?

As you previously held a UK passport I think that it's safe to assume that you don't fall into the category of workers who need their eligibility to work in the UK to be checked each year, nor is it likely that there are naturalisation issues as this would have been flagged when you first applied for a UK passport.

Has your employment been TUPE transferred in the last 28 days?

Is your employer claiming to have lost the copy of your passsport that they took years ago?

Does your employer have any grounds to believe that your eligibility to work in the UK has recently changed?

If the answers to these questions is no I can't see any reason for your employer to require that you, once again, provide proof except that the Company likes to perform unnecessary checks.

You could suggest, in writing, to your employer that they ring the UK Border Agency Employer's Helpline on 0300 123 4699. They will confirm that the check is unnecessary. (I've phoned them myself, they were very helpful.)
You could also write that if, after the confirmation from the UK Border Agency, they still wish you to provide your passport you will be happy to do so at their expense.

Update for you all. My employer has, when push came to shove, relented with a face saving request for another copy of my Canadian birth certificate (they took a copy around 6 months ago for something unrelated) and proof of NI number (I'm going to use the P60 they gave me a couple of weeks ago)

Thanks for all the advice and information. It's so much easier to point out someone is wrong when you have all the information.
