British citizenship can be revoked which would mean that you are no longer entitled to a UK passport. You may hand the current one in but retain an expired one.

Hence, many employers repeat the checks and you are stuck with providing the documents - again and again and again ....

    It's not personal! JFDI ;)

I never knew that! I thought once a British Citizen, always a British Citizen.

What happens if you were born here and have your citizenship revoked?

It applies to immigrants who have been granted British citizenship. They will revert back to their previous nationality and then languish in the UK at taxpayers expense taking their case through every court in the land and EU.
If you are born a British citizen then we are stuck with you. :)

According to this link, there have been a few people born here who have had their citizenship revoked.

It is entirely possible that someody has been granted a temporary right to work here and/or that they have chosen to take citizenship elsewhere.

Therefore checks seem reasonable to me.

That a passport is the only acceptable legal proof is something that I would question. Is an NI number valid?

You can only have your citizenship revoked if you hold another citizenship - they cannot revoke it and leave you stateless

If your home nation does not allow dual nationality (eg India) then when you became british you'd lose your indian nationality and so could not have your british citizenship subsequently stripped.

Completely agree. But the Government, in their infinite wisdom, chose to pass legislation making it allegal for firms to employ anyone who doesn't have the right to work in the UK. Result? Employers now need to demonstrate that they've checked that their employees have the right to work here. Some employers are not as thorough as others - others choose to be very rigorous.

These checks are on prospective employees.

Those employed before 1997 did not to be checked and certainly should not tolerate being checked later that they are British by a clueless jobsworth.

You don't have to use a time limited document.

Birth certificate ot naturalization certificate(or similar) will do as long as you have NI number that can be proved.

With a non uk Birth certificate I think you needed to get naturalized(only think there are a lot of pages to read through) ao should have that document
