Employers are required to carry out these checks and some advisers recommend they check every 12 months (!) so this issue is going to crop up again and again. And also with any other employer, if you leave.
It's just easiest to get a passport and really not worth battling away on this, which - in the overall scheme of things - is really quite a trivial matter. Certainly not worth losing your job over!
I don't see why people should submit to jobsworths.0 -
I don't understand why people need to prove who they are, prove they are British, when nothing has changed.

Perhaps because it is the law? Employers are required to demonstrate that every employee is entitled to work in the UK and face heavy fines if they cannot do so. Expecting their employees to provide the legally defined documentation is not an unreasonable request, and employees either produce it or don't have a job. Simples.0 -

Jobsworths get all sorts of ideas, doesn't mean they're right.0 -
The requirement to prove eligibility to work in the UK applies to job applicants.
The purpose of the requirement is to provide the employer with an excuse against liabiliy for payment of a civil penalty and in order to have the 'excuse' employers must complete the checks before the employment starts.
Unless you belong to a category of workers that need their eligibility to be confirmed every 12 months, or your job was TUPE transferred in the last 28 days, you shouldn't need to prove your eligibility again until you apply for a new job.0 -
I don't understand why an expired passport isn't sufficient. I've never heard of someone's British Passport being revoked. The fact that you qualified for it once should be enough."If you think it's expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur." -- Red Adair0

You could suggest that your employer ring the UK Border Agency Employer's Helpline on 0300 123 4699.

Completely agree. But the Government, in their infinite wisdom, chose to pass legislation making it allegal for firms to employ anyone who doesn't have the right to work in the UK. Result? Employers now need to demonstrate that they've checked that their employees have the right to work here. Some employers are not as thorough as others - others choose to be very rigorous.
