I am a solicitor :). Though not practising at the moment. The relevant legislation has been linked to already earlier in the thread, and you have also cited it, but apparently not read it.

The ring is an absolute gift UNLESS it was expressly said that it was to be returned at the time it was given OR this was implicit (eg because it was a family heirloom).

If your solicitor thought the opposite was true, I suggest you get yourself a new solicitor, who can look up and apply legislation she was previously unfamiliar with :D

    Judge who?

I spend a lot of time socialising with solicitors which is how I know. Yes a family heirloom stays within the family but a ring that isnt goes back to the person who gave it. There doesnt have to be a an agreement made in advance it could be an implied agreement.

Horace you are incorrect. Ask one of your solicitor friends to look up the law stated and explain it to you.
I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."

I suggest you keep those solicitors strictly as social acquaintances rather than rely on their advice.

It is a legal thing with regard to engagement rings - my old solicitor told me this as she had the most wonderful engagement ring and she had to hand it back when the groom called off the wedding, he too was a solicitor.

One solicitor pulling the wool over the eyes of another, classic. Your old solicitor should have done her homework rather than take the word of her ex.
