There must be more to it then they are simply giving up because the fuel pump doesn't work.
If the diagnosis was that fuel is getting to point A but not point B then a fuel pump is the likely candidate. If not then there are numerous other reasons but I assume they've checked those as well.
Fuel movement to the engine is not the most complicated part of a car. The injection part of it could be time consuming to diagnose though. So have they told you that its fuel pump or fuel injection issues?
Well afet 4 hrs diog they seemed pretty sure it was the fuel pump since then they say they have done every test under the sun, they sound like there sick of it and want to call it a day so this means me taking it somwhere else and starting again0 -

Then the advice to pay under protest and try and see if it was something they should have picked up (and then argue that case in court, be very prepared for that one).
I still think a judge would award the initial analysis though. I assume 4 hrs is not just a "link it up to a computer" have a few cups of tea and see what comes out.
I also think any further "analysis" after the fuel pump didn't turn out to be the issue could be construed as liable, although this could be the main point of your "protest"0 -

Pay how much?????????
You seem to be holding something back - you quoted £1200 for new fuel pump - and now you're saying you are not getting new fuel pump??????
So how much are they asking you for????????
You obviously expect to pay for their time - just not new fuel pump right??When will the "Edit" and "Quote" button get fixed on the mobile web interface?0 -

No offence but you are in for a rude awakening unless you can prove professional negligence or incompetence (which is what a trades professional liability insurance is there for).0 -
Man alive!
Just pay the garage, realise you have learned a lesson and take your motor elsewhere if that's what it takes.
Main dealers make tonnes of money by charging high prices on labour and parts, it's a fact of life. Also when it come to diagnostics and repairs they should follow the guides and manuals created by the manufacturer's own aftermarket engineering teams. This takes the mechanic or technician down certain routes to run certain tests using diagnostic tools etc.
4 hours is a very long time, but if they were following the tests in a manual, they were probably doing what they should have been.
Back street garages? they won't have the manuals and so just do whatever tests they want to diagnose and remedy the problem.Hoping this year is better than the last.
