When I quote for some work it costs me to provide that quote with no guarantee of getting the job. Proper garages should be the same.

After the diog I asked for a fixed fee and they came back with £1200 inc the £300.I told I would have to think about it.I rang them back and recorded the conversation.I said would this fix the problem and for £1200 would that get the car back on the road he replied yes pretty certain thats what it is.

So was not definite. You gave them the go-ahead to replace a part which they thought was the likely cause of the problem. It didn't work but if they replace with the old fuel pump I feel you still need to pay them for the work you agreed to them doing

yes but when I was told what it was I asked another mechanic and he said it was unlikley it was the pump so I asked again are you sure and I was quite smuggly told well the fuel going in one end and not coming out the other so Id say so.

I'll keep a look out for you on rogue traders but won't be calling you.

    I don't trust roofers anyway.

No, I don't think that they ought to be paid £1200. For what work they claim to have done, ie diagnostics and a new fuel pump; it's too much in the first place.

When you call on the services of professionals you expect them to know what they are doing. When they agree to accept the work there is a degree of onus placed on the professional to perform the task of effecting a repair. As you rightly point out, when you are called to repair a leaky roof you would not expect to receive payment until the leaking was stopped. Similarly when you put your car into the hands of professional car mechanics you expect them to effect a repair. In this case they have not been able to and while it may be reasonable to charge a certain amount for the time taken, it is not in my view, reasonable to charge £1200 when you are no further forward than you were.

You need to make contact with Citizens Advice in the first instant about this. The proposed charges are unreasonable.

Some years ago I had a garage replace my brake pads and at the same time they fitted a new exhaust. The total cost was about £220 and I paid for it using my credit card. The brakes squealed each time I applied them and it drove me nuts. I took it back twice and they fiddled around with it, but still no joy. I wrote to the credit card company and told them that I was unhappy with the garage and that I wanted my money back. The credit card company refunded my account with the whole of the £220 and that was that. I put up with the squealing as it cost me nowt in the end!
