So another nsd today, making 4 this month and 3 in a row. Pretty pleased although almost a different story as nipped into B00ts to see what wonders they had in their sale, before realising a) I currently have just 20p in my purse, b) am trying to keep from going too far into my overdraft this month, c) have toiletries of all types, shapes and sizes galore, d) I've pledged to the no unnecessary toiletries challenge this month and e) I'm trying to declutter not add to it. Not to mention I'm trying to throw as much at my debt this year as I can. So instead I managed to get OH to buy me some dry shampoo, which I use to cope with my fine, oily hair and came home with my 20p intact :D

Had my revised payslip today showing the correct figures and have been told that the same will happen in reverse next month. Trying really hard not to worry about them somehow getting things wrong next month and trying to deduct the £12k they never even gave me. I know realistically I'm being daft to worry but the niggle is there.

Made a slight overpayment to my interest charging predators yesterday, so one step closer to my targets. DGDs are coming over tomorrow for a couple of hours and then on Monday I'm going to declutter my clothes. Today's declutters child's blow up sofa going to DGD1 as her blow up chair popped the day after she had it and threw away broken tatty elephant ornament, making 5 declutters in 5 days. :T

Off to bed now, night all, hope your weekend's going well

    Thanks Princess

So today I am trying to decide if

    a) I want to join WW online considering if I do so via TCB I can have 3 months for free. Has to be done today as the tcb offer ends today. However, will I definitely use it?, do I need it, when I can go to DD for advice and am pretty au fait at how to diet, I just need to stick to it? Can I justify the spend now and wait for cashback?

Its funny just typing this has made my decision for me and the answer is No!!!! If I struggle to lose weight over the next 3 months I will reconsider and can pretty much guarantee that another offer will become available, plus I think WW clubs have a free 1st class and cookbook offer on at the moment and I believe you get all the info you need in the 1st meeting.

    b) If I should sign up for a Daily deal of cut, blow dry and conditioning treatment for £12 or a half head foils, cut, blow dry and conditioning treatment for £24? I need both done but can buy the tint and do it myself for 2 for £9. However, I did say last year that I would have my hair done professionally every 6 months and then do it myself in-between and I think I last had my hair coloured more than 6 months ago. It's in bad need. I have a bit of time to decide on this one as the offers are on until Tuesday. Perhaps I can persuade OH to pay for it for me :D

I cannot believe how far I have come in 8 months, this time last year, despite being broke and up to my eyes in debt, if I saw offers such as these I would not hesitate to take them. Now I question whether I actually need them and then whether there is a cheaper option. All done really without compromising my lifestyle. So I have a lot to thank MSE and my dear friends on here for. As I posted earlier in the week I can actually see an end to this struggle, even if it is a long way off currently

BFN off for a wash and then to pick DGDs up for a few hours. OH has agreed to take them out, which considering how badly behaved DGD was last time is a wonder.

  • I think £24 for the works at the hairdressers sounds more than reasonable for a half-yearly treat! Even better if you can get Grandad to pay!!

Thanks Lucky, I think this is the way I'm swaying, especially as OH has just spent £26 on rugby shirts that he doesn't really need. I'm going to moan about the state of my hair, mention the £24 offer and see if I can get him to stump up the cash.

Sounds like a good plan to me Granny. My hair needs doing desperately but I have the girls hair cut instead, so mine will need to wait a while longer.

Sadly it didn't work, the response I got was "What another Christmas present?" To which, I replied, "No, you could just pay for it for me as I need it done" To which, he looked in disdain and no response. Nothing much has changed then, still him having what he wants when he wants it and me having to budget and go without. :(

We went out and he paid for a shelf and new towel rail etc for the shower room, a gift for DMIL for Mother's day in the B00ts sale and then coffee and a cake each for us. I'd taken a drink each, a banana, a bag of crisps and a small bag of maltesers each for the DGDs. They didn't even get as far as the chocs and DGD2 melted my heart when she said my cake was "Mine Cake" and therefore they both shared that with me as well.

I've just taken them home after a couple of hours of fun play, they were both delightful today and now I've made leek, potato, broccoli and cauliflower soup and chilli that actually started out as the base for my leek lasagne until I a) realised I'd forgotten to buy any cottage cheese for the cheese sauce, (didn't really want to have to go and get it tomorrow as I'd end up spending extra and OH wouldn't of got it for me) and b) had a bit of an accident with the chilli flakes. So I added some 5 beans and have now got a big pan of chilli for the next 2 days.

So far today has been a nsd for me and I have no plans to spend anything. Still haven't decided what to do about hair, maybe mention it to OH again tomorrow :D. No declutters today but planning a tidy up tomorrow so no doubt will find something. Weigh day tomorrow, wish me luck.

    Being Green

Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the older woman, that she should bring her own grocery bags because plastic bags weren't good for the environment.

The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have this green thing back in my earlier days."

The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations."

She was right -- our generation didn't have the green thing in its day.

Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were truly recycled.

But we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags, that we reused for numerous things, most memorable besides household garbage bags, was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our schoolbooks. This was to ensure that public property, (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags.

But too bad we didn't do the green thing back then.

We walked up stairs, because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks.

But she was right. We didn't have the green thing in our day.

Back then, we washed the baby's nappies because we didn't have the throwaway kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts -- wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing.

But that young lady is right; we didn't have the green thing back in our day.

Back then, we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity.

But she's right; we didn't have the green thing back then.

We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull.

But we didn't have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint.

But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the green thing back then?

Explains as well as the need for being green, the reason why a lot of us now find ourselves being frugal and in need of losing weight. On a less serious note, nsd #5 and 4 in a row
