Help please to speed up computer following sticky

Hi, I hope some one can help me, I have a Packard bell running windows xp with less than 1kg of ram. I am not very computer savvy but can follow instructions (hopefully). I believe I need more ram but as I have just been quoted £70 ('give or take a £10') I am hoping I can do something myself with your help. I am following the instructions in the sticky,

Igb RAM on XP is more than enough, notwithstanding a small part is reserved for yr graphics processing.

When I looked at yr hijackthis log, I really thought where does one start? You have so much stuff that really is totally unnecessary, it may well be better to start from scratch by doing an XP re-install. However you could start by uninstalling all the stuff that you have loaded onto the system such as the O&O defrag, Symantec, superspyware, etc. You appear to have loaded onto your system so much stuff to protect it that you have well and truly passed the point of diminishing returns - you just need a a good AV and malwarebytes, get rid of the rest. Thats just for starters.............

TakeThis and robmar0se may be on the right track, but you could try eliminating some of the startup/defaults are you sure you followed the sticky there is a lot of stuff there you don't need, oh and you don't need help from PC World either

As a first step, get CCleaner, go to tools > startup and disable everything bar your antivirus. Tick and fix all the 016 DFP entries in HJT. Reboot the pc and post a new hjt log

I am following the sticky but i'm a bit slow and am on number 4 at the moment. A couple of years ago I foolishly let in a trojan through emial and since then my husband has put the equivalent of a chastity belt on the system, he doesn't trust me to not do it again. If I uninstall avg security, when I re -load it will I have to use one of the 5 downloads I have paid for.

I'll let GunJack answer in full, but for starters you have multiple anti-virus programs running (AVG and Avast) which will cause untold problems.

I would also remove SUPERAntiSpyware and O&O defrag

Hi Figment, I only just loaded avast as i was trying to follow the sticky's advice and came a bit unstuck. Are there numbers for for the superantispyware and the oand o defragment? I see there is an 023 service oand o is this the only bit to delete. We have bought the avg anti virus and I think my husband would want to keep this one unless i can come up with a better working solution.
