I think you just get over excited whenever anyone mentions a trader who shifted a dodgy car, and the SOGA, then go off into your rant to try to deflect anyone who actually tells the customer they have rights enshrined in law. We know you have a great vested interest, but it's not really doing dealers a lot of good in a thread asking how to find a decent one, is it? At least the op will be reassured about going to one eh?

    I have a good car sales where i live ! :j
Reasons for this statement ? read on ..........
Bought our Mondeo Estate from a local , smallish , car dealer and when i was arranging a pick up date he told me he was not happy with the injectors on the diesel engine , asked me to wait a few days while he had it sorted out , no problem .
Phone call 2 days later , car ready , arranged to collect next day , everything done and came with a full service sheet included !
While looking through the paperwork and info book about the car came across a receipt from a local Ford branch for work done on Injectors £850 paid !! now the dealer had made no mention of any costs to me when collecting the car and when i asked him on the phone, he said he had taken the cost involved on the chin as he had promised me a good , correct motor !
Now thats got to be good service !
Now this bit i really like .............. had the car for 6 months and he called me to ask how the car was going and was i happy with it ? big yes to both questions ! then on the 1 year mark he called to remind me the car was due a yearly service !
How good is that for a dealer ?
So Yes , there are good dealers around !
    A Bast**d I May Be ! I Was Born One !
    Whats Your Excuse ?

You mean rights enshrined in law - like the magic pixies the dealer must use to get all the cars parts back to new??

The SOGA is vague and grey and open to interpretation. This means that people like you can immediately jump onto one small phrase and give an 'anti-dealer' slant on it. The SOGA is designed to protect both decent, honest customers and decent, honest traders, therefore a decent trader has nothing to fear. On the rare occassion i do have an issue with a customers cars that i am unsure how to handle i simply phone Consumer Direct and get their take on it. They are ALWAYS sympathetic and they well know that customers can be hugely unrealistic in their expectations. They will give fair, unbiased advice to both customers and traders alike. They certainly dont go 'you're a !!!!!!! car dealer and deserve only to burn in hell' - which is the impression that some would like to believe on here.

I dont have ANY vested interest. I come on here as myself, who happens to be a motor trader. I dont come on here representing my business or touting for business. I am merely giving an opinion based on my experiences and my understanding of the customers rights - unlike others who just 'assume' they know.

And the first thing i did on this thread was to advise the O/P - and anyone else who subsequently reads this thread - on how to find a decent dealer. It is of note though that this was several posts in, all of which had previously been giving the motor trade a kicking.

  • given that this forum sub is about motoring, usually people come here when they have a problem they fear they cant sort themselfs due to a trader or dealer has told them "you bought with no warranty tough" or "your warranty dont cover that but yet the car was purchased only days prior"

yes also people come here before contacting their trader or dealer first, this is because that person has limited confidence in handling situations such as these, you may think well its simple pick up the phone and tell them, but those suffering depression and mental health issues can find this a very anxious situation and come here merely to get info to give them the confidence and the steps in wich to take to help them through contacting the dealer/trader and what they could possibly expect from them, most are horror stories, but good general advice is also dealt by traders and independant people here alike.

you and others have taken a personal slant on advice because you are in the trade its your bread and butter water and a roof over your head buisiness and when someone attacks a dealer for doing wrong you and other will take it to heart.

i agree with you customers can be unrealistic in their views of what is major failure and common wear and tear exception of brakes, but most people buy a car on the hope a dealer has vigorously checked the vehicle for major defects that should be rectified before it goes on sale.

Unsurprisingly, Mikey declined to reply, rather than admit he was wrong.

    I'll comment on that thread.
I agree with Mikey, dealer should of replaced at no cost within 2 months regardless of the previous 11 years.
I'll ask again as you didnt answer me several weeks back,if you and sb are so confident in your views as traders why dont you name your businesses?
Went shoplifting at the Disneystore today.

Got a huge Buzz out of it.

Blimey that sounds just the sort of dealer everybody should be told about!
Thanks for the replies so far i didn't realise it was such an emotive subject.?
All I was wondering is how you sort the wheat from the chaff I suppose, and word of mouth probably is best to a degree.
    thanks

Can we get a name and location for this dealer? Maybe the OP lives near it? Even if they don't, this thead might come up in a Google search and send a few customers their way.

But mikey seemed to be of the belief that the part was 2 months old NOT 11 years old. A lot of his argument hinged on that premise.

Old parts fail. In the case in the thread, the dealer offered to pay a contribution on what was in fairness a wear and tear failure.

Simply because i am not here as a spokesperson for my business, i am here as a forum user, who happens to be a motor trader and can offer advice / opinions based on my experience.
