Please, please, please - join slimming world. It's a great diet plan that, at the heart of it, is simply about eating healthily - everything in moderation.

Nothing is off limits - you can have biscuits, but you just be sure to have only one, not a whole pack. You can have chocolate, but a small Freddo bar not a family size Dairy Milk!

It was straight forward for me and I was able to lose 2 stone in 4 or 5 months IIRC.

Tragically I've put it back on and more, but that is because I stopped going to the group, stopped sticking to the plan and returned to my old habits of sandwiches and cakes for lunch, burgers on the way home etc. This is inevitable, which is why at SW, once you achieve your target weight, you can attend the group free of charge to keep you motivated and maintain your new weight.

My breathing has become bad and I lack energy.

I think you should see a doctor. Your health has been adversely affected - laboured breathing is serious. Perhaps weight loss will be sufficient to treat it but I think you should get a professional opinion.

Your physical appearance and attractiveness are red herrings. You know your husband and mother love you. Your health is more important than looking good in the mirror.

Half an hour energetic walking 5 times a week. This will relatively quickly bring the energy level normal and bring appetite under control. If it does not within 4 weeks have both of those effects, something else is wrong [emotional, physical] and you need to identify and address that.

I second this. When did you last see a GP and get tested for diabetes, hypothyroidism, etc? Do you know what your blood pressure is?

Get a health check first before trying any diet.

I was referred by my GP for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) for stress and anxiety which caused my compulsive overeating. I've just finished 7 weekly sessions and can say that it's been a huge help.

It's taught me to challenge my own negative thoughts about myself and see that while I think I'm being nice to myself by eating when I'm upset, in fact it only makes things worse.

It's also taught me that I was eating to squash my emotions down and that I need to express them. It's scary at first but gets easier the more I do it.

The CBT has really helped me tame my eating and even start to cut back and lose weight. You have to be really honest with yourself and the therapist and work at it, but I've found it much more useful than I thought I would.

So I would say definitely go to your GP, explain honestly what you're going through and see what he/she recommends. Ask if CBT is available in your area and whether they think it would help.

Being overweight & unhappy with breathing issues is hard
Going on and sticking to a diet followed by permanent lifestyle change is hard

You just have to make a decision about which hard you are going to live with.

Seeing a councillor sounds like a good idea. I would go see your GP, and also ask about hypnotherapy. I've heard great things about it. I'm considering it myself. Best of luck xxx

whilst it's great you have your husband's support, make sure you're doing it for you, not him, as otherwise you may find yourself stuck in a secret eating habit, which is also not healthy.

if you think you are emotionally eating, maybe keep a diary of what you eat each day as well as how you feel?

also for now could you substitute what you're snacking on? if you want something sugary then fruit or sugar free jelly, dark chocolate is better than milk as usually you can only manage one or two squares.

if you're regularly eating sugary food then that *will* make you more hungry. sugar means insulin spikes, once this drops back down again your body wants more food. a Low GI diet will keep your insulin levels constant, meaning you're less hungry overall.
i have this book which is fantastic as it uses a traffic light system so really easy to follow but there's lots of resources online.

Good luck, losing weight is very hard and don't get discouraged if it's going slowly, studies show the slower you lose it the more likely you are to keep it off.

Once you've decided how much you want to lose, try setting yourself mini goals as well and think of non-food related rewards once you've reached them. for me, i've got my eye on a handbag that i'll buy once i've lost 10% of my body weight. these little goals keep me focused as i've got around 80lbs to lose which seems like an insurmountable figure. but for now i'll concentrate on losing 10%. then once i've done that, i'll concentrate on the next 10% and so on x x

Tod - that did genuinely strike a chord with me as I am struggling with much the same problem as the OP. So simple, and so true.
Thanks. I'm going to print it out with a suitable pic and stick it on the fridge and kitchen cupboards.
