I don't want to sound harsh but no diet will work if you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

Dieting to make someone else happy ? Been there and done that, all that happens is that you lose the weight, things improve for a while, then the slightest little comment or incident will send you rushing to the fridge for the chocolate bar you've hidden.

You need to tackle both things at the same time, start a healthy eating plan but you also need to sort out why your self esteem is so low.

My ex used to make comments about my weight and also told me he loved me. Turned out he was lying, he took off with a floozie but only after i discovered his affair, he wasn't going to tell me about her, he was happy for me to provide hotel facilities for him (bed food clean clothes etc) but preferred the way she looked.

I'm definately not saying that this is what will happen to the OP, but it made me wake up and smell the coffee ! Once i realised that HE was the one who had a problem with my weight, and not me, things changed.

OP, i'd suggest joining Slimming World, it's not a diet, nothing is forbidden, it really does work and can easily fit in with the rest of the family. BUT, i'd also look at getting some counselling to boost your self esteem, you'll be amazed what a difference it will make to your efforts to lose weight.

    Good luck xx

AI just don't exercise the reason I don't exercise is because I am on my feet all day ironing (my job) so the last thing I want to do is be on my feet any longer because it really hurts.

So why not go swimming and/or cycling?

modern lifestyles (computers, sedentary work, cars etc) contribute to UK people getting larger added to this is that foods are often low in nutritional value - I read recently that nettle tea infusions can help with losing weight - & talking as a person who's energy levels were low - it's helped with relieve tiredness with restarting exercise.

oh & I would second the counselling idea - I have been doing a part time evening counselling course & we have to practise on each other - it's helped me loads in processing issues of my own!

Zumba is a good recommendation. Also cycling to work should reduce stress levels and fight weight gain.

OP, have you checked with your GP re your health problems? If the breathing difficulty is nothing to do with weight, I'd hate for you to focus on a diet and ignore it... Not that I want to wish bad luck on you! Hope you're doing well.

Atleast you have admitted you have a problem and you need to sort it out.

I'm in a similar boat kind of, I need to lose weight I've got just under 2 years till I get married, I don't emotionally eat and I don't eat a lot of food I just don't exercise the reason I don't exercise is because I am on my feet all day ironing (my job) so the last thing I want to do is be on my feet any longer because it really hurts. I've tried diets like slimming world, lighter life etc but I gain the weight afterwards.

I'm seriously thinking of paying for a gastric band or something along them lines.

I'm sick of it being on the tv every day about obese people and there should be a fat tax etc etc When larger people go to the doctors to get help they get shoved from pillar to post not knowing where to go or who to talk to I know because I've been there I'm still waiting for that help. Why is it no the same for alcoholics or drug addicts?? Look at George Best for example how many livers did he get before he finally died? He just couldn't lay off the booze.

Sad thing is you NEED to eat to live you don't need booze or drugs to live.

    Steph xx

Well when I worked as a chef,I ran at night (around 2am) after doing wieghts
often went for a 0600 swim before work,or during my split shift
As a postie I did martial arrts at night and cycled 10 miles to/from work
If you want to lose weight then it takes work.
Can you raise/lower your iron board(?)
Its comfier(though looks daft) too work at a lower surface with your legs spread out a bit.(a tip from an old chef)
or move your work surface higher.
A gastric band is simply a cop out for most and a band aid over other problems for many
I say this say someone working through post shoulder op pain in the gym and on the bike.
not much fun,not easy but necessary

You have my sympathy - I get nagged by my mum to lose weight. I guess mum thinks that I should be 7stone like I was when I was 21 (I ate like a horse - eating everything and anything). I spoke to my GP about my general wellbeing and he referred me to a health trainer whom I see every 4 weeks. We don't talk about diets, yes, I get weighed and it doesnt matter if it is only a few pounds that I have lost. I keep a food diary every day of what I eat and have noticed that I have started to eat more - there were times when I could go for days without food because I just didnt feel hungry so that when I did eat my body clung onto every last calorie in case it was going to be starved again.

I try and eat breakfast every day (something that I never did) and now plan my meals carefully but if I want chocolate then I will eat chocolate and the same goes for cake but I eat less of these things. I am also exercising more e.g. walking to the shops instead of driving or catching the bus, that way I am not forced to buy more food than I can physically carry.

At my last weigh in - I weighed 11st 11lbs and over the past two months have lost about half a stone which may not seem much in the great scheme of things but the weight is coming off slowly and staying off.:j

OP - cycling and swimming would be ideal for you. Hope you manage to get through the emotional stuff and start a new way of eating for you. Good luck xxxx

as cottonhead has declined to post her hieght and weight/dress size as I requested (though you COULD PM me hun - if you dont want to make this known), there is no way I am taking her word that she is overwieght.
I think its rather irresponsible to give dietary advice without knowing AT LEAST the basic facts!

Are you a nutritionist or a medical health professional working in the area of obesity?
