Hi there Mike, that happened to me as well, the only job I went for had already gone, I tried ringing the person who wanted the job done, I left messages, never got a reply, when I finally got hold of her, she told me the job was done about 2 weeks ago.

I wrote to RT telling them this, and also to stop sending me jobs that had other jobs in it, like a bit of tiling, or a bit of plastering, I am a decorator not a tiler or plasterer.

It took me approx 6 months to get them to take me seriously, as I wanted my details of thier books, they kept emailing me, ringing me at home, 'to discuss this situation', I told them I am not interested, so far its been 6 weeks without a job offer, so hopefully they have got the message.

.....and as tradesmen it costs us just under £12 to bid for each job......
I have used them in the past (as a tradesman) and I've given up. Partly because the above is obviously not told to the customers (as witnessed by the small jobs that would be £30 max less £12 fee, so not worth bothering with) and partly because the customers don't describe the job fully or correctly and there's no way you can query the job description without paying to get to quote. For example, there was a bathroom job which involved laying some 100cm tiles. Yes 100cm is what it said in the description, but you can't check. I'm sure such things exist but I am equally sure you need a FO sized Rubi (costing £000's) to stand a chance of cutting them. So how can I possibly quote for the job without knowing whether the customer has made a typo or is accurate, without wasting money up front?

I have writer's block - I can't begin to tell you about it.
You told me again you preferred handsome men but for me you would make an exception.

  • I live in N London and always struggle to find plumbers, builders etc and never seem to know anyone who can give me a recommendation.

However I have just discovered the Daily Telegraph has a site where you can look them up:

    Hope this is helpful.
  • hi guys
I signed up to RATED TRADESMEN about 5 months ago, I have tried to cancel my subscription, there seems to be nowhere to do this on the site, I have tried to phone their 0870 number 4 times and sent about 6 emails, I have been left hanging in the air on the phoneline and none of my emails have been replied to, in the meantime they have taken £47.00 from my bank account for my unwanted subscription. How can I get in touch with them to stop this and get my money refunded? Any clues..........
    nice girl really.:j

If you read my post you will see I had similar problems, but I just kept emailing them, I think it took me three times before they got the message, they would leave messages on my ansaphone, but I would never return thier calls, they also sent me emails asking me what the problem was

Crikey, I had already told them they were giving me the wrong flippen jobs, so I just ignored all thier attempts to 'talk to me', and I havent received any jobs from them, thank goodness.

There's another site which is just tradesmen recommended by members of the public:
    http://www.trustedtrades.co.uk/index.php

I found it on my local MP's web site but haven't used it myself yet.
I write blogs about kitchens ... and I design kitchens for a living ... I just love kitchens!
  • I posted somewhere else on here, i found www.yourlocaltrades.co.uk and wondered if anyone else had seen it/used it.

Brilliant idea, but not many to be found in Tyne and Wear it seems!! Looks like I'll have to become a 'white van chaser'

    Hi Stilernin

Have you tried the South Tyneside Council website. They have a list of safe traders on there somewhere.

I am currently on the lookout for tradesmen to rectify the work done by the builder who built my extension. He fitted the kitchen and bathroom as well as the usual building work. Unfortunately he finished everything really badly and I have to now arrange quotes to rectify it all. I'm sick as the proverbial chip!

    Hope this helps
