    It doesn't matter if it's a myth.

So stop/starting the fuel pump is a good idea?

Almost everyone would remove the nozzle from the tank to figure out why it had stopping pumping, they'd probably stand there squeezing the trigger with the nozzle pointing upwards toward the car. At this point it switches back on, dousing the side of the car and your legs in petrol..... Really clever stuff.

Dispel the myth and this never happens..... Problem solved.

So you remove the nozzle because it's stopped pumping and squeeze the handle do you?

If so, you deserve to be doused in petrol.

was checking flight time on my phone while fuelling
Case of another smart phone with a dumb user attached to it ;) I have a hunch that OP possibly looks at the phone during driving as well otherwise s/he would have not been so upset about it.
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

    ^^ Ad hominem

You seem to have far too greater optimism in human intelligence.

How can a lit cigarette not ignite petrol?

Fantastic stuff, this literally made me choke on my lunch. I love how Hollywood influences people's thinking, even when 100% incorrect.

As for those who think a mobile phone can ignite petrol in any way shape or form...

I've never seen any of the 2 films quoted in that article, so it doesn't influence my thinking.

My husband's grandma died in a fire started by a dropped cigarette so excuse me if I don't find the subject of fire funny. My own aunt was seriously burned (not by her own doing) but by someone foolishly putting petrol on a barbecue. She was standing nowhere near it at the time.

And i'm pleased that you find it amusing that anyone could possibly thing that a lit cigarette could ignite petrol. How stupid of me. You're taking findings you've read about on on the internet - please go do your own experiment and post it here. Or if you're that sure it's 100% safe, let your child do it.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but petrol is engineered to be highly stable, otherwise it'd be useless in a motor vehicle. It's oxygen that burns, the fuel is merely the accelerant that allows it to burn.

Your 30year old rug/carpet/armchair/bed/curtains, will have an ignition temperature far lower than petrol, they act the same way as a candle wick, they're fabric with air pockets. A constant supply of oxygen.....
Not so much an issue now that EU regs (?) demand fire retardant materials.

I believe it's important for people to know the facts, to know exactly what could realistically happen and exactly what cannot happen in any set of circumstance, and not to be paranoid about non-issues......

Because a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing.

As this is motoring forum, i'll use the "washing your car with fairy liquid" example. I tell someone it's a very bad thing to do, I get the response "i've always done it", but if I explain that it strips any protective layer and exposes the paint to sunlight and acid rain, then they generally get the point. Same goes for using boiling water to clear a frosted windscreen, you need to explain how glass works or they'll just ignore you.

It always makes me laugh that you can't use a mobile phone on a petrol forecourt but you're allowed to use an high current electrical device that makes a ton of sparks, nice and close to the ground, every time you fill up - namely your starter motor.

Both present negligible risks, but the mobile phone one really is stupid. That said, their petrol station, their rules.
