Pulled in at Shell this morning to get some petrol and was checking flight time on my phone while fuelling. Petrol got to £30 and stopped.

!!!!!!? I thought, and looked up and thought 'are they worried about me doing a runner or something?' It started again, got to £50 then stopped again.

Eventually some random customer came out of the shop, and shouted at me that it was a a fire risk :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: and that was why there were stopping it.

    What a bell end.

Seriously, it hadn't occurred to me before I used it, but it's clearly more dangerous for them to repeatedly stop the pump in this situation, as this is distracting, and apparently if there is any risk it is caused by dropping the phone on the floor and having the battery contact spark (although on my phone that is even less unlikely as it has a sealed battery and closed battery door).
Erm, if you did not have the phone in your hands in the first place you wouldn't be at risk of dropping it would you? *rollseyes smiley sorely missed*

You obviously aren't the brightest because they cut your fuel off twice and you still didn't cotton on that it was because you were using your mobile, someone had to tell you :) so do everyone (including the petrol station staff and other customers waiting to get fuel) a favour next time and respect the signs. You wouldn't go in to someones house and ignore requests to take your shoes off because "my shoes are clean so there is no need to take them off" would you.

Why else post that you're using a mobile whilst filling your car up with petrol if not for a reaction??

Is there not some petrol stations with mobile phone masts hidden in their price boards?

LMAO, I genuinely just googled that and found the article in todays Dailymail. Heard about this years ago (around the same time Top Gear warned against wearing shell suits and filling up).

Just turning the pump off but allowing it to continue if you pull the trigger again isn't really going to stop anyone. Most will just assume that the cut off in the nozzle is acting screwey. I've encountered more than enough pumps where this is the case, particularly in the Mondeo some older pumps really don't like the design of the filler neck in the Mondeo.

They'd use the tannoy and stop the pump completely if they really wanted the OP to stop.

So yes, most likely the attendant was bored and decided to mess with someone who was ignoring the signs.

It's a myth that needs to be stopped, the general public are stupid enough already, without adding to it. Stuff like this becomes dangerous, because stupid people take stupid idea's, add to them and make them even more stupid.

Cue daft bint charging across the petrol station forecourt to have a go at somebody who's on their phone, tripping over a hose in the process, splashing fuel onto a hot catalytic converter and blowing the entire street to kingdom come.

    It doesn't matter if it's a myth.
