Help please
Have just made a maidera cake using a packet mix that I found lurking at the back of the cupboard.
Cake looks and smells fine, but just went to clear up and throw the packet away and noticed the expiry date is August 2012
Was going to share it with my neighbours to say thanks for being there for me, but now scared I might poison them !:o
Would you eat it or not ?
Thanks for any advice
Tan
I bet the mix has a 'Best Before' date and NOT a 'Use By' date. So it will be fine to eat.
At worst, the raising agents might be less effective so the cake wouldn't rise, but you say it looks ok so the raising agents worked. Cake mixes are just pre-weighed flour, sugar and raising agents eg baking powder - with a few preservatives added.0 -
Just check there isn't anything moving around in the packet and it'll be fine I'm sure.Opinion on everything, knowledge of nothing.0

It will be fine, but you need to add 1 tsp of baking powderBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Ive been to aldi to do my foid shopping. Ive just been to the fridge and noticed that the six individual pork pies I have bought go out of date tomorrow:mad:
Can I freeze them? And how long would they take to defrostI'm trying so hard to be thrifty, but it doesn't come naturally. You lot are an inspiration!JUST LOVES THE O/S BOARD0 -
I know its wrong but I have eaten such items past their dates and few items if in a good fridge will go off as soon as the date arrives.
Does this help?

I've frozen short-dated pork pies many times and they've been fine. Defrosting time will be a couple of hours at most for mini pork pies in this weather, otherwise defrost them overnight in the fridge. If you're pushed for time then cut them into halves/quarters as soon as they've defrosted enough for you to do this.#Life isn't about waiting for the storms to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain #We must be willing to let go of the life we planned so as to have the life that is waiting for us #If you focus on what you have left behind, you will never see what lies ahead - Gusteau/RatatouilleGC 2022: £0/£2,500 total spend0

Hi all,
I need to use some lemon juice in a recipe today. I have an open morrisons 'jif lemon' in the fridge, but I dont know how long its been there - its got to be months! It doesnt go out of date for over a year, but the label says to use within 6 weeks of opening. It smells ok, would it be safe to use?the only debt left now is on credit cards! The evil loan has gone!! :j:j0 -

I agree, I've had them open for months on end, with no sign of deterioration. I think the high acid content must repel any bacteria.
Sniff it, taste a drop & hold the bottle up to the light to check it's not gone "lumpy" in the bottle. If all OK, I'd use it.0
