We've got one of those pottery chickens, too - a brown one; it was given to Mr LW by his mum, years and years ago - apparently she gave one each to him and his two sisters.:D
It lives on the kitchen windowsill and contains - not eggs, but a ball of string and a Stanley knife! This is what Mr LW kept in it when I moved in with him, 10 years ago, and nothing has changed there.:rotfl:
I forgot to mention earlier, fruit lives in the fruit bowl, which is on Mr LW's computer desk in the lounge. 'Taters live in a basket in the bottom cupboard, other veggies live in a drawer in the fridge, simply because that's where there's sufficient space for them. I never, ever buy supermarket fruit'n'veg; I send Mr LW on a "F&V run" to the market every Saturday - we get much nicer produce, at reasonable prices there.:oIf your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0 -
Butter, over the winter, in the fridge. Reason being fridge was large, side was small. Kitchen was so cold that it was more spreadable from the fridge!
That reminds me of a time we were staying with a friend. The only heating was a gas fire in the living room.
He told my DD that she could help herself to any of the fruit that was out on the side in the kitchen, so she went and got a banana. It was frozen solid! We had to hold it in front of the fire to defrost it!:rotfl:
Going back to the OP, we keep the butter and cheese in the fridge, jams out on the side or in the cupboard.
We have an egg skelter for our eggs so we can keep track of which are the freshest as we're getting up to 18 a day from our hens.0 -
We keep all cheese in the fridge, but if we're going to have stilton or brie, then we leave out 20 minutes at room temperature before attacking it :-)To repeat what others have said, requires education, to challenge it,requires brains!FEB GC/DIESEL £200/4 WEEKS0

Who says that pottery chicken egg baskets are uncool? I think they are super cool, and actually trawled round charity shops trying to find one. As a result, I now have 3, one brown chicken which sits on the side in the kitchen, and two white ones which sit facing each other on the mantlepiece in the dining room.

Right, that's my parent' christmas pressie sorted - many thanks Gigervamp, what a wonderful idea that egg skelter is.
As for what's in the fridge or out on the side, eggs butter, sauces, the frequently used jams and sauces all on the side. Occasionally used jams and sauces in the fridge - also bought mayo as I prefer it cold, HM mayo needs to be chilled anyhow. OH's coke in the fridge as he likes it cold, tonic on the side as I don't like my G&T too cold as it kills the flavour and the frozen lime wedge is generally enough chilling.
Having worked as a chef I am scrupulous about chilling down leftovers and fridging quickly though. Curry and stews mature just as well in the fridge as left out on the stove top and without the risk.0 -

Tip for butter not kept in the fridge-put it in a dish and cover with cold water-change water several times a day-pour off before using-butter will stay spreadable and not go offDebts Jan 2014 £20,108.34

I keep cheese wrapped up in a big roses type tin in the dark in the pantry, its cool in there too but obviously not as cold as a fridge. Tastes so much better like that. Butter is always left on the side. Mayo and salad cream is kept in the fridge, along with jams once they are open. Things like mustard, pickle, marmite is kept in the cupboard, so is tomato sauce!Raven. :grinheart:grinheart:grinheart0
