Lostinrates is married to the wrong man: he should be mine as he's a fellow cheese-fanatic. What bliss
uhuh, i'm keeping him, but you can have some of the cheese? How does 5kg of frozen F&M stilton sound to start with sound? I have been working my way through the other 5k over the last year. I like cheese, but there is a difference between likeing it and committing suicide through eating too much of it. And actually, stilton is one of my least favorites!0 -
I do remember a gazzzilion years ago someone brought us an egg store (porcelain hen) and until that time I never thought of storing eggs anywhere but the fridge - I actually used to line it with straw inside and eggs never spoiled and less likely to crack when boilingBitterAndTwisted wrote: »
Eggs and tomatoes in their respective receptacles on the counter. I found one of those chickens-sitting-in a-basket bowls with a lid in a CS quite recently and snapped it up. I'd quite forgotten all about them until I saw it.
That's where mine are too :rotfl:...I didn't want to admit to having one; some people I know think they are so "uncool"...but I love mine, its white and just perfect for a dozen eggs to fit in neatly :TJan - June Grocery spends = £531.61

Cheese is double wrapped after opening and kept in the fridge.
Jam (and all sauces) go in the fridge
Eggs are kept in the fridge
Potatoes fresh vegetables and fruit are kept in the fridge
Butter that is being used, is kept at room temperature (unless its hot and periodically it gets shoved in the fridge with the rest of the stock
Marmite - horrible stuff _pale_ (unless i'm hormonal) is kept in the fridge
I too have an american type fridge and i keep squashes, fizzy drinks and other things in there that dont necessarily need to be kept in a fridgeThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

I don't care how much it costs to send by post, I'll take it! I can't remember the last time I invested in a bit of cheap cut-price Stilton never mind the utter sybaritic luxury of a great heaving 5kg round of Fortnum's best.
Can't understand the King of Cheeses not being a top favourite. It does not compute. Mind, the attraction could wane very, very slightly having ten kilos of the stuff littered about the place. Hooray for freezers!0 -

Not sure what shape its in having let him carve it up, but have pmed you..
Tbh, would be a better idea to enter into some sort of discount cheese buying cooperative so that fellow cheese fiemds could buy whoopsied whole cheeses and split them, so that you get the benefit of lower cost on a product, that quite frankly, is aged on purpose often enough, without the hassle of it hanging around in unbearable quantities!0 -

See, that's one of the few benefits of being middle-aged: not giving a flying wossname about what other fools think is cool or not. I saw it, thought "Coo, I remember those from way back and I WANT!" and then it was mine to love and to cherish. And look after my darling eggies.
I might have to confess to another thing or two which I have and love that are equally uncool.0 -

Entirely too sensible. The kind of friends I have are far more interested in spending their disposalbe incomes on gig-tickets and getting p!ssed on beer than mundane housekeeping, money-saving concerns.0 -
Almost everything is kept in the fridge. I don't keep bread there though. I know some people who do, but I don't like it out of the fridge. I usually keep potatoes in the fridge too - I find that they grow green and sprout quickly otherwise.0

Just to add, fruit is in the fruit bown, not the fridge. Only fruit from the supermarket that is stored under a blanket of nitrogen and refrigerated first, needs the fridge to stop it going off. That is why you should use your grocer.
Tattles are stored in the cupboard just like the mushrooms, in the dark, with the carrots.
And the jam does have a lid in it, sometimesI hvae nt snept th lst fw mntes writg ths post fr yu t cme alng hre nd agre wth m!

Who says that pottery chicken egg baskets are uncool? I think they are super cool, and actually trawled round charity shops trying to find one. As a result, I now have 3, one brown chicken which sits on the side in the kitchen, and two white ones which sit facing each other on the mantlepiece in the dining room. They look fab! uncool indeed, mutter, mutter, huff. In my defence we need 3, as we have 5 backyard chickens, so always have loads of eggs:)
We keep cheese in the fridge, packet of butter kept in the fridge, with a small slice left out in the butter dish, tomatos in the fridge, potatoes in a lightproof sack in the cupboard, jams in the fridge if room, but otherwise in the cupboard. Ketchup we keep in the cupboard, I know it *should* be refridgerated, but the children practically drink it, so we get through it far too quickly for it ever to go off!0
