Compare your current commit charge ^^ to your post #11 one:-

    Commit charge says
    Total 467832 Peak 460680
    Physical memory 458092

Shows you've now got some clearing up to do :)

It's scary switching things off, I always worry I'll break it, although I'm back here so it can't be that bad!
I did the commit charge after I had got back on to here, I hope that's not affected it too much

    up your pagefile...

right-click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Performance (settings), Advanced tab, Virtual Memory (change), set a custom size of 2048 max/min, ok it all and you'll need to reboot.. that should help a bit

Disable ctfmon - control panel, regional and language options, languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok

tick and fix ctfmon and DLASHX_W.DLL using hijackthis

disable the lightscribe service using services.msc if you don't you lightscribe cd's - ( if you don't know what they are, you don't use them)

start, run, services.msc - disable these services UNLESS you use them. (make a note of any services you disable,if you have any problems related to these services subsequently, simply re-enable them)

    SSDP Discovery Service
    Remote Registry
    WebClient
    Distributed Link Tracking Client

install cleanmem if you haven't already

create a system image backup and boot cd, then you won't have to go through this again in future

if it's still slow, upgrade the ram

Ok, I've done those two and the computer seems a bit happier, but I've not been home for a few days so I haven't installed any of the extras that I need (office, PDF thingy, dongle) so I may still need the ram. I get paid later in the week, then have to pay bills by which point I should have been able to add my extra bits on so I will have a better idea.

I also managed to find the music!! Yay! It's on memory sticks at the moment so I'm going to be putting that back on soon too.

Thank you all for all your help with sortin the laptop out. I'm so glad I didn't have to replace it!
