Clearing out laptop

I have a rather old laptop that is on a go slow. I haven't used it for a while but a relative did borrow it to see if they wanted one.
I'm trying to get the laptop to run a bit faster and have followed the sticky at the top up to a point - I don't know what things need to stay on the computer to make it keep working.
I have Office which I know I need to keep
I have a dongle which is staying
I need to watch DVDs so I would keep media player?
I'm still going to need to keep some other things aren't I?
Do I need to go into each profile (there are 2) and delete things?
As I said I haven't used it for a while so I'm not too bothered about what was on there before. Although someone deleted Itunes and has wiped all my music, I would like to get that back if it's still on there?
Sorry for being really stupid, I don't want to remove things then find out one of them was absolutely vital for switching the laptop on

Uninstalling programs won't necessarily speed it up, it's down to how much available RAM you have, not available HDD space.
Check what processes are running in the background and disable any you don't need, that should improve memory and CPU usage. Check the System Tray (where the clock is) and see whats there.
Downloads CCleaner and use it remove unnecessary files.

With iTunes, if the music library was deleted you can re-download any purchased music by going to the iTunes Store and click on 'Purchases' on the right-hand menu.0 -
If you have the original install disk/media for Windows (or a restore partition) and disks/media for Office and any other programs you wish to keep, then possibly the easiest route would be to back up any data to an external device and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows, followed by re-installing Office etc.
How long ago was itunes deleted (and has anything been installed since)? How do I add a signature?0 -
With iTunes, if the music library was deleted you can re-download any purchased music by going to the iTunes Store and click on 'Purchases' on the right-hand menu.
You could try something like undelete/Recuva and search for mp3
I would download a portable version on another computer and write it to a usb disk. Then boot the laptop and insert the usb and run recuva. It would depend on what software has be installed/downloaded before trying to recover the files.
So by implication this is the first thing you should do if you want to try to get back some of the music before doing anything else.
To speed up the computer you could try a livecd/usb of Linux if you like it then install over windows. I would suggest some thing like Linux Mint LXDE which works well on low spec/old hardware. If you need any help with that, there is a dedicated forum0 -

Thank you all for your replies.
I have just checked the processes and there are loads! Which ones do I need to keep running?
My system tray has about 12 items in it.
There is probably one file I would want to keep if I wiped everything off, I'm not sure I have any disks still, laptop is abut 6 years old but my dad has some. Is there a way of deleting everything but Windows and Office and Media?
I wouldn't have thought anyone would have tried to recover the iTunes, I don't know why they deleted it in the first place. None of the music was purchased, it was all uploaded from CDs as quite a bit of it was for the bar I worked in.
Make and model, ummm does nx6325 mean anything? That's what the sticker says on the bottom. It's a HP0 -
If nothing has been installed on the machine since itunes was deleted there's a chance it can be recovered (undeleted)How do I add a signature?0

post a hijackthis log!!
> . !!!! ----> .0 -
Ah, not quite nothing, I downloaded the avast and malware from the other thread. I've just tried to recover my log in to see if that is why I can't find anything but it says it doesn't have a log in on that one for me.
Is it the hijackthis log guide on the speed up sticky?0 -
There are 2240 files and 8 hidden in the system32 - I just googled some of the processes and it suggested looking in this file, that is a bit excessive isn't it?0

I hope I've done that right. I''ve not posted two logs as I have already deleted some files, scans etc from the sticky about speeding things up
I removed iTunes too, so we don't need to worry about missing mp3s, thought with so many files cluttering the place up they're possibly around somewhere0
