    I've just taken Chrome off as it was one of the things I didn't have before and it seems a little bit happier/more responsive.

    I'm just running the windows updates now, then I'll start going through all the other things I'd done and see how I go.

    I haven't bought any RAM yet, the first link I was given was asking me about the laptop so I thought it was complicated and hadn't got round to it. Can I just buy that one on that link?

    I would. :) But if more than you want to spend, we can find a smaller capacity module.

    Here is a 512MB module for £6.99.

    Check firstly to see if you have a single 512MB module currently inserted.

    If so, the 512MB module will be a good solution, as it will work in Dual Channel mode and take you up to a decent 1GB RAM in total.

    You can check without opening the memory hatch at the bottom, by running CPU-Z and checking the Memory and SPD tabs.

    Thanks for that, I'll look at the RAM when I have everything uploaded/downloaded. I need to get the computer sorted enough to uploaded IE, I never knew how much I needed tabs!!

    Ok, I've done all the things that I can do that have been posted on this thread and the sticky about speeding up slow computers and re-booted it. I've now got a warning at start up saying I am running in diagnostic or selective start up, is this right?
    I've also got programmes called sonic that I don't think I've used, but I don't know what they do to the laptop, my IE says that as sonic is a really old version it may cause crashing and freezing. Windows wants to download a troubleshooter. There's a few of these programmes when I go in add/remove

    Last post, for tonight anyway, I forgot to mention this, there are lots of these in the list are any of them essential? I don't want to start taking things off in case they're important.

    Also I keep getting an error message asking if I want to debug the page, it's come up a few times which I guess is from switching it off in the settings, do I just ignore as one of the pages hasn't loaded.

    Until you get Xp fully up-to-date, I wouldn't be too concerned...you need Service Pack 3 and all the updates following that, prob about 200-ish in total. You will prob find some of the current issues will be picked up & dealt with along the way to being fully up-to-date.

    You may need to download & install SP3 as the stand-alone package rather than being able to get it via windows updates:-

    Thank you. It's a good job I have you, the first thing I did when I got the laptop back was update windows, it had downloaded the files but you then need to go back to the updates to initialize them so it hadn't actually updated anything!! I can only conclude the laptop is slow because it understands how slow I am and is trying to communicate on the same level :rotfl:

    So now that is done, do I need another hijack log?
