helsbells wrote:I need to ring the Abbey what do you actually say /ask for when you ring up? Also what amount are we actually claiming for? Is it the fee they charged - in our case £225 less the £50 its been said was a reasonable charge ie £175 or the £225 less whta they originally said they would chrage you in the contract? The latter I don't know but assume would be higher than £50.
Hi, I called them yesterday and literallys aid that I used to have a mortgage with Abbey and I want to reclaim my mortgage exit fees. Straight away they explained they will have to send me a form to complete and they will get in the post to me, they took my name and address and that was it - simple really!

itsnotfair wrote:Thanks for that info, any ideas how we should progress? Write to C&G ask for it all back? Or are there any numbers for C&G or forms. Seems this is more than just a dodgy exit fee to me.
Explain what went on (i.e. that the deceased father was removed from the mortgage, and the new wife added) and what charges were levied. Explain clearly what you think is reasonable and ask for the difference.
Hope that helps.0 -
Can someone please tell me if "Solicitors fees" when you exit a mortgage ......is that considered a MEAF? In our case it was £100 way back in 2004.
I would appreciate you advice
Kind regards

Well here we go. Back in 1987 my partner and I took out a mortgage (now ex partner) with Leeds then they changed to Halifax. It was an endowment mortgage. In 2001 re-mortgaged to Northern Rock, I have no idea what the exit/discharge fee was and also this was still in joint names (how do I go about that) and I take it a fee would have been charged, and if I ring the Halifax or write a letter to ask what fee they charged will I get an honest answer. Secondly, I have the first statement from Northern Rock, everything was done through them and it lists like this:
Interest £455.57
Valuation Fee £140.00
Admin Fee 115.00 others Risk Charge, Completion Fee
Do any of these count?
Then came the split from my partner at the time and in January 2004 bought my ex-partner out and changed building society. Northern Rocks Redemption statement lists a Discharge of Mortgage Fee £195.00 so will I get all of that back? and what do you think I will get back from the joint mortgage from 1987 to 2001 when I was with the Leeds/Hallifax before switching to Northern Rock.
Its a good idea this claiming back but I really don't know where to start, do I ring or send a letter, and it is all a bit scary as well. Can somebody advise me
as Martin starts these things off and then its left to the forum to help each other out. I am not as confident as him. Also with my recent mortgage supplier Birmingham Midshires I had to pay a couple of times late and got charged for direct debit returned fee two at £25.00 and one at £35.00 can I claim for those from Birmingham Midshires.0 -
Hi guys,
My parents are about to repay their mortgage this year but they have had the mortgage since about 20 years ago... why is it only people who have remortgaged in the last 5 (?) years....
Also, they are being asked to pay £175 "repayment administration fee" and £50 deeds despatch fee...
Are those fees legal?
Thanks

Hi!I previously held a mortgage with GE Money, and left them in October when I moved house and got another mortgage with the Abbey(I do understand that exit fees are different from early repayment charges which I had to pay). They refer to a "Repayment Administration and Discharge fee"(which, I'm presuming, is their own personal jargon for a M.E.A.F.).The charge is for £200-has anyone had any success re-claiming from this company?Any info/tips greatfully received!:DYou can never have too many cats!0

Hi everyone
I rang the Consumer Council Office in Belfast about the "sol. fees" charge in connection with a mortgage we exited from the Northern Bank in 2004.
I wasnt sure this particular charge was an MEAF
The gentleman said that its all a "grey area" at the minuit and encouraged me to write to them.......and demand a copy of the ACTUAL invoice paid to the solicitors or refund the fee paid.
Its certainly worth the try. £100 does seem excessive and not reflecting their true cost.
What are you opinions on this matter?
Kind regards

I have called them again and this time they took an official complaint and said they'd get back to me in 5 days about it. They also said that the FSA has not made a concrete ruling on this and so they wont refund until they do. Will let you know what happens though.0 -
hi folks! how far back can you claim with this, we bought our first house in 1998 and sold it in 2003? can we still claim the MEAF?
when we moved to our second house we changed mortgage company, and sold it in Dec 06, would we have been charged a MEAF?, not sure when OFT brought in new law.
plus -- sorry, last question! -- i have no paperwork for our last mortgage, I shredded it all when we just recently moved and only have current mortgage info, but seeing as I dont have my roll number can I still call to claim? will the mortgage lender still have my info do you think?0 -
I had been holding off asking for any refund to do with the "Final Repayment Charge" as I thought you had to write in to request it, that was until today someone at my work advised that they had just called the RBS to claim their fees back and with no trouble at all they agreed and their money is being re-paid direct into their bank account.
So I tried today with Barclays/Woolwich....Just paid out £275 in Oct 06, did not have any paperwork to confirm what it would have been in 2001 when I took the mortgage out but rang up anyway. Got put through to the "dedicated" line for these queries and they confirmed with no questions what I was owed £180 plus £3 interest. Took new bank details and the money will show in about 5 to 10 working days.
Try it....it really is that simple.0
