I wonder why there has been no reporters going in to these so called medicals with cameras and proving the people out to be the liars they are portrayed here. It would be nice to see. It will come in time no doubt.;)

The assessors who are not doctors will be nurses, midwives or physiotherapists (or occupational therapists?). In some instances they will have as much - or little - knowledge and understanding of your condition as some doctors.

..................... and having only undergone a few weeks training in "disability analysis" before being set loose on people with complex mental and physical problems. No wonder these so called "healthcare professionals" get it so wrong so many times at great cost to the taxpayer in the form of successful appeals.

Do you really think that the doctors are any better prepared?

doctors would almost certainly be better prepared to use ATOS' computerised assessment well

Despite Atos Origin’s assurances that Lima is designed to support, and not replace, doctors, it is interesting to note that the company has announced its intention to pilot the use of ‘suitably trained’ healthcare professionals other than doctors (e.g. nurses) to carry out PCAs from early next year.

(Not that I think doctors are always knowledgeable and nurses never are.)

I work as a disability support worker, and regularly have to attend these "medicals" with clients, so thought I would chip in some advice from my experiences.

My first piece of advice to anyone having a medical would be, if you are failed, ALWAYS APPEAL.

Though they will never admit it, the DWP have to fail a certain proportion of applicants (for any benefit), so candidates who should be entitled to a benefit will lose out. However, if you appeal the result, you can attach medical evidence to your appeal, as well as have a fair chance to explain how your disability impacts your daily life.

You can request a transcript as others have mentioned above, and if you can prove that the person taking the medical has made mistakes in the transcript, you can question their judgement to diagnose you as fit to work.

My second piece of advice would be, ALWAYS TAKE SOMEONE WITH YOU, ideally a professional who knows you and your condition and who can give evidence on your behalf. Contrary to many peoples beliefs, other people can talk either on your behalf, or as well as you at a medical, so you dont have to do it alone.

Lastly, I would say DONT BE AFRAID OF GOING TO TRIBUNAL. Here you will have a much fairer chance of explaining yourselves to people who are actually medically qualified, as a GP always has to be present at an appeal as well as at least 1, if not 2 other professionals.

Never give up if you truly believe you are entitled to ESA/ DLA etc.

ATOS has a brief to reduce the amount to govt is paying out to benefit claimants, therefore they have targets to reach, which means that they set out to fail many claimants.
I agree with amymkeen above, unless you know that you are fit for work and are available and prepared to actively seek work.
AT the CAB where I work I have had a couple of clients in that position, but the majority are right to appeal and many are successful, especially if they have someone to back them up.

On the plus side the government is bringing in legislation to prevent disabled veterans being called back again and again. At least that's me off the hook.

For this reason, I strongly advise everyone to request that their assessment is recorded. DWP/ATOS provide the equipment for this and the claimant is ahnded a copy on CD before leaving. (Sorry OP, I know that is no help to you, but it might prevent other people from going through the same thing)

Fine advice this should be added elsewhere on the site.
