Thanks so much everyone for being so welcoming towards me :)

Crosswords and puzzles seem like a good idea for my mum seen as she will be on a soup diet! To be honest I'm not all that sure what my dad will be able to do, he's dyslexic to start with, but I dunno how the surgery will affect him, or what his appetite will be like. Thinking maybe some clothes since he will be doing a lot of recuperating at home?

are they into movies?, would it be possible to look into collecting their favourite movies, from past or childhood etc, on dvds? you can get almost anything on Amazon Marketplace for low prices, often 'as new' for say 25p+1.25 p+p etc, or if they have a specific interest or hobby you can often get documentaries, reviews etc on dvd as well (like the Formula 1 yearly reviews and other sports reviews of each year) or some of ther National Geographic documentaries or series etc? if you can think of specific interests, programs etc maybe box sets etc? my oh had several ops and was at home a lot recently, so bought fair few 2nd hand (as new) dvd's on stuff he was interested in and helped him pass the time while he was resting.

If you could let us know what sort of shows, music, sports, hobbies etc they are interested in, I will keep an eye out in case I see anything that might be of interest and Im sure others will too :)
  • Can anyone come up with suggestion on how to wrap a cake.

I plan to make Christmas cakes as gifts, as they will be fed and watered (!) to the end, ideally I would like them to stay wrapped until the recipient is ready to eat, so will be wrapped in greaseproof, then tin foil and finally cling film. My experience shows that this keeps the cake nice and moist.

I have bought lots of ribbon (needless to say cheap), think I paid £1 each for 15 metres of various colours, but what can I use between the clingfilm and ribbon?
A smile costs little but creates much :)

I did mini- Christmas cake last year and wrapped them in grease-proof paper, then clear cellophane (from eBay but you can but it in florists too) then tied at the top with ribbon. I'll see if I dig out a photo.
