Not quite sure what to do re. advent calendars.....for the last 2 yrs DS has had the lego one but a) hasn't played with any of the lego from it since last xmas and b) we really can't afford it this year. They'd be happy with chocolate ones but DD has a problem with one of her adult teeth, it came through with not enough enamel and she isn't supposed to have much sweet stuff, so a chocolate every morning wouldn't be a good idea, although she will have chocolate coins on xmas day. I have put forward the idea of a picture one but they aren't keen! I do have a 'pocket' fabric one already which I used to put sweets in but obviously can't do that either, and I can't afford to buy little presents for it.
So not sure what to do really : (
the Silent Night advent on Amazon apprantly is beautiful, like a decoration that folds out, some reviewers said they kept it on shelf or table as decoration, Ive bought it but it hasnt come yet - the Night Before Christmas blue one has arrived and it's beautiful, so may be worth a look. Otherwise how about something fun with the pocket one you have, what it she into? maybe we can get some ideas together as to what you could put in that that don't cost much and isnt sweeties!
ps how about putting a note in each one tied with a ribbon, with something nice you will do together each day, like 'watch Polar Express' 'make hot chocolate' 'make cheese straws' (insert as appropriate!)0 -

We love pancakes in this house and they don't have to be unhealthy, you could say they can have pancake day or on a weekend they get to stay up an extra hour or just anything like that which they would see as a treat that doesn't cost you anything or much and doesnt revolve around sweets.
wow great minds!!!just realised Ive just posted in reply pretty much the same thing as you! wasnt copying honest ... :rotfl:

so i have NEVER EVER finished my xmas shopping before december, but am recently self employed now so dont have as much free time to wonder round (frantically race around) the shops this year, there is a part of me that thinks, if your not shopping in december what do you dooo ( as i do love a good nosy round the shops!) i suppose you all get to enjoy xmas dvds and cosy nights in ect? i guess im a little worried il take the fun out of the build up by not having to shop? that sounds weird me saying that. ps, we do have DD who is 3, bt she doesnt understand xmas, as she has special needs.
Still have the perishables to buy in December, but I find there is always school stuff, work stuff, meeting friends and family, delivering presents and cards, plus watching the Christmas films etc - I try and post any UK presents off by 1st december so I'm not worried they will get caught in the delays. We try and go out into town for coffee and cakes to see the lights, go to the cinema to see whatever 'big' film is out and go for little something to eat, then we try and go to a country pub late afternoon when its dark and the pretty lights are on, sit by a roaring fireplace with hot toddy etc
it's nice to get the chance to do those things which you can do if everything else is already taken care of, plus can save money between now and then for those treats

am sure you will love it! my DD was sat in the garden in the sun in July reading it!sometimes I find her writing quite old fashioned but it is so lovely in this book and there is so much about the build up, the day, the baking, decorations, gifts, it's gorgeous!

ChirpyChick, we are big pancake fans too! I make the American style ones with buttermilk, the kids love them on a Sunday morning, though have to ration the maple syrup as it's hideously pricey!
on holiday they had chocolate chip buttermilk pancakes every morning .. strangely with cripsy bacon with maple syrup on it, sounds disgusting but its yummy!0 -
