No buying unnecessary toiletries in May - Challenge

I agree with tokkiandoliver, what motivates me to keep going is reading about the lovely people on here conquering parts of their stash and getting it down to what they really like. I've found myself buying more makeup recently when I know I shouldn't be. To balance this, I've avoided going to Lush even though I really want to try a new face mask and some bubble bars. I'm also trying to use samples before I buy more. I know I'm not forced to be here, but it makes it easier to resist if other people are making an effort to do the same. But that's just my opinion
I think in our own ways everyone is making an effort to cut back - otherwise why invest the time to come on the thread? Everyone chooses to do it in a slightly different way I guess - a bit like dieting. My efforts suffered a serious setback when I won tickets to an event and got a goody bag with almost 50 items in not long after joining the challenge.
Am impressed with your resolve to stay away from Lush - sadly my 2 DDs won't stand for that with me!Not sure if this is a beauty con but the resident beauty expert on QVC advises that a separate eye make up remover be used on the delicate eye area. Having been a devotee of this lady I do use a separate one and have been using the L'oreal one for some time and love it. It's effective and feels so cooling on my skin.
I wouldn't say that we encourage QVC though. You should try reading the threads on st.com where people brag about how many kits they have purchased. Those people who post on there about not purchasing are quickly ignored.
What is the L'Oreal eye make up remover VALM? I am a Floracil devotee - convinced by the same resident beauty expert I guess but would be interested in finding a similar product on the High Street. I prefer cleansers that I can use on the eye area - like C&P but then always wipe over with a seperate eye make up remover. I don't like cream eye make up removers which is why I am such a fan of Floracil. Would be grateful of any suggestions that I can try when I get down to my last bottle of Floracil.
I too have looked at ST.com but find the people on there a bit nasty sometimes - making quite personal remarks about presenters. I also don't get the fascination of trying to find products before they appear properly on the website? Maybe that is just me.I do feel a bit egg-faced though considering I came out with the blarney justying why I shouldn't buy the LE TSV but then bought it anyway. Having said that though as Willowbee points out above it did give me thinking time and the fact that Advanced Orders were available gave me that breathing space to pay for it as well.
At least it was a considered purchase - you didn't get onto qcut or the red active button anxious that it may sell out!:rotfl:. I have also ordered on Waitlist before now and then have rung and cancelled before the item has appeared back in stock - not that I am suggesting you do this as it was a great price for the TSV. The fact the toner wasn't full size put me off so I managed to resist this one - not bad going for me as I didn't buy the LE tsv earlier in the year either. In the bad old days I would have ordered both of them without batting an eyelid.0 -
It's a shame about the bad reviews for Benefit's Porefessional. I know that other silicon fillers have made my pores feel like they need to clean themselves out! I was hoping this one would be different. Still, I'm pleased I have some to try and it saved me suddenly caving and spending £23.50 (!) to try it. (I don't think I would have paid that. I was tempted by a Christmas set in the sale that had it in but I didn't want the other products).
I was really disappointed with Bad Gal mascara. It's a shame they're not giving away their new one (They're Real, I think...) I'd quite like to try Girl Meets Pearl
I really rate Laura Geller Spackle primer. I'm sure the name is a bit offputting for people but it doesn't feel like silicone or make my skin any oilier than it is.
I may buy a copy of Glamour as Emma using Bad Gal. I'll check what her stock of it is later. I have Girl Meets Pearl and am not that impressed by it but having said that a lot of Benefits highlighting and lip/cheek tints don't do anything for me. I have slightly olive coloured skin and none of these products especially show up on me. I found a Benefit cagalog yesterday and was flipping through it. Was amazed at how many different variants there are now of these type of products. Do love Lemon Aid and Dallas powder though.Back for the No Buying Toiletries challenge. I pledge to only buy when I run out of a product that is not already in my stash no matter what wonderful emails land in in my Inbox or threads I read on MSE re: glitches!

Hi Kiplingmonkey, I tried Floracil once but it didn't remove all my eye make up as effectively as the L'Oreal one does. Here is link:
http://www.superdrug.com/loreal/loreal-eye-make-up-remover-125ml/invt/73395/&bklist=. It's the same colour as Florcil. As mentioned before I have to be so careful with cleansers near my eyes as I can easily get milia.
Some of the comments on st.com are so immature and !!!!!y. I do like to have a nosey at the TSV beforehand though so I can consider whether it's worth it to me.
I think the thing with LE TSVs though is that they never have all full sizes of cleanser/toner/moisturiser. I was just impressed that they had full sizes of the cleanser and moisturiser plus the body cream that I love. I did calculate how much it would cost me to buy those items that I wanted alone and it came to a higher price than the entire kit hence why I wanted it so much.
I've been put off buying a Waitlist after reading comments on st.com that people claim they have received used/returned products when they have ordered from Waitlist. ie someone said they found crumpled tissues inside a handbag ordered. Euugh.Back for the No Buying Toiletries challenge. How vile - have never had anything like that happen to me thankfully.
Thanks for the link - Have bookmarked it so I can remember what it is when I need to buy more - I have a 400ml bottle of Floracil on the go and another in the stash (I think) so no need for any at the moment but good to be prepared for when more is needed. Again, this is progress for me - previously I would have rushed out to get the L'Oreal even though I still had plenty in reserve.0 -
VALM - the LE collection did look like it was really good value. It's a nice thing to look forward to later in the month.
For me, the point of this thread is to make considered purchases rather than random buys and that is what you've done
Thank you for the Spackle recommendation. It is such a funny name :rotfl: Like someone a while ago I had no idea what it was! Did someone say that it was close to the American name for Pollyfiller, or am I making that up?? :rotfl:
I haven't tried the Porefessional yet but I will report back with my impression of it. I've had a bottle of Benefit High Beam highlighter that has been on the go for years. The pale pink suits me (I'm very pale pink too, skinwise :rotfl:) and Girl Meets Pearl looks like it might be similar but with an updated formula.
I have a bottle of Very Irresistable as well! I got it free with a magazine subscription and I never really took to it. It hasn't gone off though so if your bottle is more than half full it's probably ok too. (Apparently perfume only starts to go off when you're under the half-way mark. I've sorted my perfumes into a 'to use up quickly' box based on this advice but I keep getting distracted by my lovely L'Occitane perfume).
Kiplingmonkey - I think you hit the nail on the head with your comment:
"I think in our own ways everyone is making an effort to cut back - otherwise why invest the time to come on the thread? Everyone chooses to do it in a slightly different way I guess - a bit like dieting."
For me the beauty boxes are a planned purchase that is akin to allowing myself a slice of chocolate cake as a treat :rotfl: I really have been astonished at how many used ups I've clocked up since joining the thread (over 50 now) but I'm also still actively on the HG hunt. I'm learning to let offers go but I'm very much a work in progress...I also get a lot of joy from my beauty products (I'm another that doesn't smoke or drink) and tend to use things slowly/savor things which is very :money: but not so good for my used up totals! :rotfl:0 -
At long last another lip gloss UU :j:j:j
Clinique Glosswear for Lips - Sunshine
WNBA - it was part of a five mini gloss collection pack I picked up in New York. I wasn't too keen on the shade. I still have far too many glosses before I ever even think about another purchase.
On the subject of eye make up removers - my HG is Clinique Take the Day off. I have tried quite a few other recommendations including the L'Oreal one and the Garnier one. I have been fully converted to the Garnier Simply Essentials - it takes all my eye make off in one go. No rubbing and it is fine on my sensitive eyes (I wear contacts). I can't recommend this highly enough - though I don't wear waterproof mascara so can't comment on that.No buying toiletries Graduated May 2017Decluttered 2016 2469 items, 2017 1580 items :j2018 3060 itemsSealed Pot Challenge No 0380 -

Bad Gal doesn't work for me either, but I love Lemon Aid, Highbrow and use Creasless Shadow Liner in Skinny Jeans when I am making an effort, other days it's an Estee Lauder Liner Pencil. I wondered about trying the Dandelion powder as I am often as pale as a ghost, will have to ask for a try out when I get near a Benefit counter again. The best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time. Just back from shopping, and I'm ashamed to say I have a confession to make. While out I had a make over at the Benefit counter. I must admit I've been desperate to try Benefit stuff, as have not tried any at all. I am really really pleased with the results, my niece said it looked lovely and thinks, I should buy all the stuff. Plus when I got home DH thought it looked great and made me look at least 5 years younger (possibly more).
Well as you can imagine make over, plus weak will, plus niece's influence led to an in, but I think this is justifiable.
In - Benefit Hervana Blusher - now for the justification a) the blusher really suited my colouring and looked good on me b) I don't actually own a blusher, just don't usually use them c) I am determined to make more effort with how I look which means wearing makeup more often and makeup that suits my skin tone etc better.
Also have free GWP 7.5ml the porefessional
I loved the other stuff she used as well which were high beem highlighter and Hello Flawless liquid foundation.
I think I may buy the high beem next month, do like the way it looked and don't have a highlighter, and am considering buying the Hello Flawless when my foundation runs out which could be a long time.
I'm 36 now and with 40 creeping ever closer have realised I can't really get away with not wearing any makeup at all anymore, I just end up looking a scruffy mess. At the moment I'm using new EL one on weekends and when I go out and using the No.7 BB cream that I forgot I bought (on a whim before joining the challenge) for work, as don't have enough time to apply proper foundation before work. I still have one more No.7 foundation in the stash but it seems to be too dark for me, so waiting to see if it suits better in the summer, if not will either GA or TA.
Sorry for the really long post.0 -
