No buying unnecessary toiletries in May - Challenge

  • I can see both sides, but I hope you ladies will hear me out.

The sole purpose of this thread is to encourage each other to not buy unnecessarily, as we are all on this thread because (and let's all be honest here lol) we have a problem with over-purchasing beauty products. I think what some are saying is that we should try to help each other to stay away from things like monthly boxes which does add to our stash count. That's just an example. I do understand that it may sound like someone is "policing" or making thread "stricter", but I don't think that's what others (and myself) are trying to say. I like to see it as returning back to the core of why this thread started.

I'll be very honest and this is not to start drama, but last month I was inactive, because it felt like every time I came on this thread it was just people chatting about what they bought, I signed up a few months back because I thought I joined the "no buying unnecessary toiletries" thread, not the thread that chatted about beauty hauls (I have another thread I go to for that LOL). I hope that makes some sense.

Having said all this, I'm just a newbie, so my opinion probably won't matter much lol.

I have a problem with buying........i need someone to rant to when i buy and i know i shouldnt haha. It is not my intention to encourage unless someone specifically asks! Imsure we are all grown up enough to say no? Well i would hope so -tounge firmly in cheek haha. Thing is we have to log our ins so we kind of have to say if we buy something and if it something we like, human nature makes us gush a little lol

Oooooh, can I join. My flat is starting to look like Boots. I do actually have an order from Boots on it's way :embarasse but it was paid for with points. So, do you just sort of post a little review when you finish a product? I have read a bit of the thread, but am a tad confused.

Welcome to the challenge Hermia

Firstly, let me just say that if you feel like you have a mini boots on the go at your flat then this is definitely the thread for you. Lots of us on here have been where you are (and some of us are still there... grrrhhh!).

A good starting point is to put together a stash list of all your products. This will give you a starting point so you can look at your areas of weakness (mine's include perfume, lip sticks and glosses) so you know what you don't need to buy for a bit. Lots of us put our lists on here and take great enjoyment at looking at everyones else's lists too. :D

Whilst doing your stock take you can look out some of your older products to get using as soon as. When you get a UU it is such a great feeling - like you are talking back control. Tell us about the product as lots of us like to hear reviews. You might even be lucky enough to find some HG items.

    Good luck

An IN Maybelline illegal lengths mascara, wanted to try one of these new fibre mascaras to see how they compare as a few people I know have gone lash extension mad but personally for me it seems quite expensive for such a short term effect. That and they have complained about not being able to wear eyeliner or mascara as they can't remove it properly as the lashes come out.

I am on the look out for a new mascara and someone in work had said they were getting on well with this one. I only wear mascara on my top lashes but would be keen to hear your thoughts on it when you get round to using it.

After threatening to PNTN for the last week, I have been shamed into it tonight. Ended up at the M & S (monthly) sale today and was trying on some shoes :o and some ratty looking toenails complete with chipped polish. So they are now a lovely pink shade - Nails Inc Paris.

Also TA - Rimmel Hot Gossip which had leaked and sealed the top shut.

Thanks for the replies, keep em coming they are helping me decide!

Now then my little partof the discussion about the nature of this thread.

This is purely mythoughts, I am not saying what is right or wrong OK?

I am very much a newbieto this, so am just getting to grips with it. What I can say is thatsince joining I have learnt to use up everything in a bottle beforegoing on to the next thing. I had so many bottles of shampoo andconditioners that were almost finished at the back of the cupboard! They are all gone now. I have one conditioner plus a couple ofsachets to use up. And only one shampoo I think. Also I did notrealise I had so many items! 120+! So this has helped me organiseeverything and seriously look at prices and quality.

I have never bought abeauty box before this week, but I am glad I did. I can now trydifferent products to see if they suit without the massive price tag.At the end of the day it is my choice (fault!) if I buy more and moreof them, nobody is forcing me! If I ask for support in not buyingthen I'm sure that will be given too.

And any help I need isgiven – such as the questions I asked about what cleansers to use.Otherwise I would have gone and gotten a cheap one and probably throwit away 'cos its rubbish!

Anyway it may be anessay that doesn't make much sense, but then again neither do I ingeneral!!

Sorry for all the typos, MSE keeps crashing on me :(

Is that in all Debenhams stores how do you get it?

They had a small sign on their stand showing their products that were award winners and at the bottom it said "Free skincare sample for beauty card holders" or something to that effect. I just asked the sales assistant about it and she got me a sample from the drawer. :) Not sure if they had a choice of different things or not.

Thanks for a really, really interesting read. As I kicked off the debate, I'll chip in. I wouldn't want this thread to be 'zero tolerance' for one moment.

I love reading about all the little incidentals and particularly appreciate Rosemary's postings...

But it is important to remember what this thread is for.
No buying unnecessary toiletries. So please remember to think before you buy! And if you do fall off the wagon, dust yourself down and climb back on but don't pull others off...

I've loved recommendations on here, and loved finding out about new things. I have also loved watching my cluttered untidy bathroom become a lot less cluttered. Dozens of bottles that had literally become fixtures have been emptied and disappeared into the recycling.

I have thrown out the evil knives and blades that sliced hard skin off my feet. Thanks to applying creams and lotions to my feet every day I no longer have hard painful skin or corns. I wouldn't have done that without the thread.
My legs didn't get sore, dry and flaky under trousers during the winter thanks to all the lotions and butters I applied. I've loved all the little freebies I've tracked down.

There's a lot of good come out of this thread - thank you to all those who have shared opinions, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't extremely relieved to find out I wasn't a lone voice!

Hello, here is my view on the nature of the thread for what it's worth:

I love the chattiness of the thread and the way that people who buy too many beauty products and realise they have a problem - all of us - can talk about it with people who understand and don't think that anyone who finds themselves in this situation is barmy. I'm with And on this one; I feel that at times the thread veers into beauty box p*rn which seems to be contrary to what we're here for, i.e. supporting each other to buy less and take control of our stashes.

Have a nice bank holiday weekend everybody, it's not raining here for the first time in what feels like months!

So onwards and upwards ladies, bright and sunny here, so gardening for me. Those going to the shops take your list of allowed purchases with you and try very hard to resist the other stuff, you might comae away feeling virtuous and wallet not much lighter:rotfl: Whatever, have a good weekend and we can all fess up/gloat later.

Yesterday I managed to look at all the magazine freebies and resist, might have been a slightly different story if any of the nails inc polishes had appealed to me, but after 6/7 years of buying (collecting) polish I am pretty focussed on colours/finishes I want to add.
