Hello, I'm new here and I hope you don't mind me joining in! I couldn't find an intro board to introduce myself lol :o

I'm nearly vegan, literally just need to give up/ find a good substitute for cheese and I'm there! It sucks that Green and Blacks chocs aren't vegan anymore! I miss the cherry one :(

Hi Izzy, there's not much of a good substitute for cheese apart from Daiya which is only available in America (unless you order an expensive block and ship to UK), the next best is probably Redwood's Mozzarella which melts a bit but nowhere near enough as Daiya. Then after that I'd say the raw nut cheezes are the best tasting but are more like a spread ;)

Better news on the chocolate front tho :j check out the raw chocolates like Conscious Chocolate, there are tons of different makes so may take some trial and error to find the one that suits you the best - but you have fun trying and they are all totally vegan ;)

Wow thanks for the info! I tried Redwoods cheddar and didn't get on with it but I'll certainly give the Mozzarella a go! And raw chocolate? Mmmmm!

I'd love to be vegan but I found it was more expensive/time consuming. Any tips on that? Also my other half's an omnivore :-(
Yeah I guess it's more time consuming because you pretty much have to make everything from scratch, but that is a good thing because then you are not succumbing to expensive processed foods and is what we should all be doing regardless of our nutrition persuasions ;)

I think a lot comes down to organisation such as meal planning, like I made a massive pot of stew the other night which became a nice quick, easy but filling soup this evening after a hectic day. Other times I make extra spaghetti bolognese or chilli and freeze some for other meals or when it's just me at home. And I think when you meal plan you tend to have less waste etc so it works out a bit cheaper and you can buy reduced veggies and use them up quickly IYSWIM.

I would suggest that making seitan saves a fair bit too instead of buying the ready made meaty alternatives, but if you want those alternatives for convenience, looking around for the offers really helps like when Linda McCartney sausages were £1 box.........lol I stocked up on a fair few for the BBQ's ;)

And then there's foraging or growing your own, you get your food for free AND a work out at the same time :D

Hey - thanks for the reply. Looking at my post again, I can see that I was being pathetic. Either you believe something or you don't - if I think it's wrong to exploit animals then I should be vegan, whether it takes 5 mins or 5 years to prepare a meal. I'm cross with myself for going with convenience over principles every time
Aw don't, anything you do vegan, will help the animals even if it's just eating vegan say 3 times a week ;)

It's annoying we all have such busy lives and are rushing around at 100mph and are seduced into convenience foods because what anybody eats really should be made from scratch anyway to help with health and cost :)

  • Hi

Just wanted to let you know that Green and Blacks chocolate that was vegan is still vegan, it's just that for allergy purposes they had to state that it may contain traces of milk and so they decided that technically that might make it not vegan so they took the "suitable for vegans" label off. But it is still the same recipe and is still vegan!

But doesn't it say contains milk rather than may contain milk? Which means they can add milk to it at any time and don't have to notify anyone.

Savvy, you're killing me with those buns! *dribbles on keyboard*
