    Welcome newbies and soontobes :D

Jazzy if you hunt out your local health shops they should be able to provide you with vegan cheese etc. Be warned the vegan cheese tastes nothing like dairy cheese. However, it works well mixed in with other foods i.e. in pizza or toastie. You'll also find dairy free chocolate there like whizzers and Palmil (sp). Green and blacks do gorgeous vegan chocolate but they're owned by cadburys now so some vegans don't like to support them.

You can find more chocci options at http://www.animalaidshop.org.uk/chocolate.htm and hotel chocolate do some lovely, but expensive, dairy free chocolate.

The vegan store http://www.veganstore.co.uk/ and Goodness Direct http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/sect/IV.html are also useful for vegan supplies.

If you grab a copy of http://www.animalfreeshopper.com/html/ it'll give you lots of vegan goodies from mainline producers and stores.

You can find a marge called pure in most health shops and supermarkets.

The soya milk is an aquired taste. I started of using sweetened soy on cereal and now use unsweetened alpro. It's a good brand which uses soy from sustainable sources, so no contributing to the deforestation of the rain forests

More info for vegans here http://www.vegansociety.com/html/

If you do manage to go vegan you'll need to take a vitamin b and an iodine supplement, or eat seaweed for the iodine :lipsrseal

    HTHs :D

I could do with some recipes atm. My diet hasn't been great lately as I've been a bit poorly. Simple, low fat recipes for livening up veg would be much appreciated.

I cannot do without meat in my diet - I tried but oh dear. Anyway I admire anyone who can. :)

Squiggles - have you tried Alpro chocolate soya milk? It's yummy - even my meateating husband agreed it was lovely.:j

I like almond milk but I suppose it may be an acquired taste.

Maybe just try and cut things out gradually and leave things you really like until last. To be honest your tastebuds will probably change and maybe cow's milk won't taste as nice to you soon?

I tasted vegan choccie in the first weeks I became vegan and thought it had no taste to it at all but now it tastes different to me. I really thought cheese would be hard to give up but now I don't have cravings at all.

Just make sure you introduce new foods into your diet so you don't feel like you are deprived.

cat72 - alpro vegan cream is nice - I use it for loads of sweet and savoury dishes. you can get it in supermarkets, (asda) next to the longlife soya milks, or at holland and barratt.

    very nice with strawberries!!!!

  • Another newbie here and vegan to boot! Interesting thread. yummy food and quick to make = lots of finely chopped veggies i.e. small sweetcorn, flat peas/sno peas / mange touts, carrotts, onions, mushrooms and anything else you fancy. Start with onions and fry in a little oil then while they become translucent put some water on to boil with a little marigold bouillon powder - the purple tin is vegan- put noodles in the water to boil and soften you can get good egg free noodles from any asian grocers. Add the other veggies to the onions and then add a slosh of tamari or soy sauce and some chinese 5 spice mix to taste. Veggies and noodles should all be ready to serve at the same time. top with some engevita flakes and some cashew nuts. Seriously scrummy....... mmmmmmm.

I like the idea of this where can you buy it please?

Welcome grumpysincebirth, thanks for that recipe it sounds lovely. You should be able to pick up almond milk at your local health store and some supermarkets.

Hey Maddie, I don't know if you saw the opening statement of this thread

Perhaps you'd like to open a thread to address any of the questions you have :)
I hope you don't mind me saying, sleepymy, but doesn't it work both ways. Someone asks for info on being vegan (for all we know because she'd like to become one) but you're worried about flaming so encourage her to ask elsewhere. But a vegan who has 'slipped' a couple of times is quite spectacularly picked apart over several posts. :o

I think you're lovely so I hate to bring this up but I just think it will make peole who are interested back off, and possibly never bother making the step into veganism.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.
  • I just want to say that I really am glad that I found this thread. I recently posted on another site (mainly for mums) and all I said was, 'is anyone else here vegan'. I got absolutely slated and I have no idea why. I came to veganism of my own accord and I think others should as well. I am not the sort to preach so why everyone thought it was ok to have a go I don't know. As soon as I saw the opening thread I wondered if others had had a similar experience. Am i just being naive thinking that vegans would be generally peaceable sorts? BTW. If any of you are near ALDI they do really reasonable bottled vegan beers to suit all tastes from the stout type heavy flavour to the lighter but still tasty bud types.......MMMMMMMMMMM - BEEEEEERRRRRRR!
