Ok so would it work to say "well we'll use the Dotty P money to buy the £480 one you like but it's a shame you don't want to make do till this time next year cos we'd have probably been able to afford that £1,000 (or similar) by then (so long as you would be able to afford it by then).;)

what's the credit limit on barclaycard as they have good deals for BT. u could transfer the DP balance onto it and get the telly

barclaycard is nearly at it's limit (£900) so I'd have to ask for an extension.

Have you asked the rental company what it would cost to buy the tv you currently have off them at the end of your rental contract?

I'd pay off the DP, just because the interest rate is so high.

Then go into Currys or comet or anywhere else that offers 0% finance (actually Argos might and their TVs are good value). Then get the TV on the 0% deal.

You really have to buy a TV rather than rent, for no other reason than to stop your OH upgrading everytime a the contract runs out. At least this way he has no opportunity to upgrade.

Yes it was going to be about £700 because DH thought it was a rent to buy which it wasn't so we'd have to buy it for it's full value, which to be honest it isn't worth and it keeps turning itself on and off!

Don't know whether this would work with a tv, but we used to rent a fridge and a washing machine when we first moved in together. After a couple of years we decided it was time to buy our own and called them up to cancel. They said we could buy the ones we had for a very good price (about £50 I think). They clearly couldn't really be bothered to come and get them and there probably isn't really much of a market for re-renting a used appliance which is a couple of years old.

So might be worth phoning them to cancel, saying you've decided to buy one, and seeing what they say?

Otherwise, how about this: if you cancel the tv and pay off the DP card you will have an extra £56pm. Try and persuade dh to make do with a cheap tv for now, but tell him it's only for a year, in the meantime, save the £55pm into a "new tv next year" pot, which would be £660 in a year - which would be a VERY nice tv which would be all his... Or try for £500 by Xmas, which he can spend in the January sales...

Thinking of it from their point of view, there's no way it's worth £700 to them.
They won't be able to re-rent it for the same amount they've been charging you, they won't be able to sell it for anything close to £700 when it's second hand, and it'll cost them money to come and pick it up, and there's a huge risk of damage with moving tvs around.

I suspect that you could talk them down to a fraction of that cost.

Assuming they can rerent it for £20 a month for 18 months, it's worth £360 to them, take away the cost of collecting it and the admin they have to do. It's probably only worth £300 to them.

Tell them you're not going to buy a tv and have £200 saved. To save hassle, you'd like to keep that one, what's their best price.

I can tell you now he's sooner divorce me than get a small non-hd tv... lol!!!!

    Hi Sarah

You say this as a joke but actually I don't find it funny. Is he a man or a schoolboy?

With the uncertainty over your job, I can't see why he's prioritising a TV over financial matters.

How about telling him you'd sooner divorce him than pay for a flash new TV... yes I am joking but only just.

Will get Dh to call them on his lunch and see what they say. It's just a false economy renting so it's got to go one way or another!

It's not a case of him prioritising a tv over our financial stability as if it came to the crunch there would be no choice but I've been sat here working with figures trying to cut down stuff in case of a worst case scenario and I haven't actually talked to him about it yet. Our contract is up next month so we would have to have sorted something soon anyway and I just thought I'd gauge opinions from the wise owls on here before chatting to him about it. :)

oh and the man vs schoolboy thing is debateable... ;)
