Help! What would you do??

In april our rented tv contract is up. We have a 26inch LCD flatscreen tv (DH is VERY picky about his tv's as he plays his xbox 360 and it HAS to be HD *sigh*. We're currently paying £36.59 a month for it and the contract is up in april so we have 2 options, renew the contract (and maybe change tv but knowing dh he'd end up getting amore expensive/bigger/better one!) or cancel and buy a new one..

Here's my dilemma. By the end of march we will have £480 which we were planning on paying my dorothy perkins bill with. My dorothy perkins minimum payment is currently £19 a month.

SO.... do we... use the £480 to pay off dorothy perkins and save ourselves £19 a month....
or...
Use the £480 to buy a new tv and save ourselves £36.59 a month? £480 would buy one that DH would be happy with...

HELP! I'm totally torn because on the one hand we'll have another debt paid off, or we could rid ourselves of our tv contract and own our tv outright, as well as saving double the month every month which would come in handy.. plus DH would love me forever if I let him get a new one. LOL.

What about buying a tv then putting the £36.59 onto the dorothy perkins bill as well as the £19 therefore paying off £55.59 each month and getting it paid off quicker?

That's a good idea.. At the moment we're saving up all the money to pay it all off in one go.. but even if we did it like that it'd be an extra £36.59 saved that we wouldn't need to struggle to find!

    Hi there

The way you put it, it seems to make much more sense to buy the tv, then use the money freed up to pay off your DP bill.

However have you exhausted the options for free tvs first? Our Freecycle always has TVs on offer.

Presumably he won't listen to reason regarding a freecycle tv untill you can afford to buy a new one? If thats the case the suggestion above is a good idea but really I'd tell him that he's got to wait until you can afford to buy one and get a cheapy 2nd hand or freecycle one.

    Hi I A

Is the dp have a high interest charge? Could you pay the DP card off as planned and get the TV on 0%. I think renting is an expensive way as you are paying them over £400 a year. A £480 TV will probably last you a good few years. The other option is get a cheap TV until you are debt free, you could even try freecycle and then save up for a fab one.

If it were me I'd just get any old tv off freecycle... but DH is massively into his gaming and gadgets and is very picky with technology... (TBH I'll be lucky if i can convince him to ONLY spend £480 on a tv! He was eyeing up ones at over a grand!!)

And maybe you could get the TV for less than the £480 via hot deals or something using quidco? So any extra could go on the dorothy perkins bill as well, which sort of gets rid of both of them if you were overpaying. I hope that makes sense! (I'm thinking about this too much now! off to make coffee and think again!!)

The dotty p's card is 24% and with our credit rating I'd be VERY suprised if we got anything lower than this TBH (We had to get a car loan at 24.1%!). The interest doesn't bother me TBH as at the moment we're managing to pay off a debt every month dotty p's is the last 'little' one before we tackle the big boys barclaycard and Ste's citi but we may be losing my wage in May if I can't find another job as my maternity pay ends so looking at as many ways as possible to cut our bills down which is why I thought of this..

Forgot that we also have 60 in the big posh tv £2 coin fund which could go towards either the tv or dotty p's...
