How would you answer these questions on an application form

Why do you want to work in retail?

Who do think Aldi’s key competitors are? (Lidl but how do you

This is on an applcation form for an apprentice at Aldi and it says answer as fully as you can.

Truth is I don't particualrly want to work in retail but a job is a job.

No-one can answer the first question for you. But putting 'I just need a job' isn't very savvy, either. If you need the job then you need to answer the question in a way that makes you sound interested. Equally, it's for an apprenticeship, so look up what that will involve and tailor your answer to that.

Competitors? Aldi are a supermarket providing cheap everyday foods. You can work out their competitors from that!
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

Personally, I wouldn't employ you. If you haven't got the common sense to figure out why discount supermarkets are competitors and are too lazy to even research this why should a supermarket (or anyone else) give you a job. Similarly, I can't believe you are so lacking in imagination that you have posted on here asking people to tell you what to write under "why you want a job". Perhaps if you started showing some initiative, enthusiasm and effort you might be better placed to find work.

Oh no need to be nasty. I've never done this before.
  • Do you think retailers want to hire people who don't actually want to work for them?

There aren't any "right" answers -they are trying to find out more about you-why you want the job -where you see this apprenticeship leading you etc.

As for the competitors question -they want ro see if you have an awareness of their business -eg someone might say ASDA and someone else Waitrose so you'd think the Waitrose would be an instant fail but an applicant might come up with some interesting reasons why they feel Waitrose and get their attention.

According to your previous posts it's your son who is applying for apprenticeships . Maybe he should answer the questions with his own reasons not yours ?

  • For retail, focus on areas such as engaging with customers, enjoy a fast moving environment, daily challenges etc.

Good luck & ignore LisaW123, in this job climate just getting anything is difficult & we cant all work in our dream job so keep going.

I was actually trying to encourage this poster to start thinking for herself. Anyone who can't be bothered to do so will never find work in this climate.

All the staff in our local Aldi are very keen and work really hard (and are paid more than the other supermarkets) I don't think Aldi are interested in people just there to make up the numbers and who are unmotivated.

My friend works in Aldi as a graduate trainee manager and she only acts like she's really motivated because she doesn't want to be sacked. Said she'll leave soon as she finds something better.
