Ridiculous rubbish sack rule

Options
I found out today that my local council won't collect household rubbish (ie non recyclables) UNLESS it is in a black sack, by which they mean a refuse sack that is black, no other colour is allowed.

Needless to say, it is the first time I've heard that petty rule - I've lived here over 22 years fgs!

My rubbish was neatly tied up in a heavy white sack (not a bin liner) but sat all day on the kerb - thank goodness a dog didn't tear it open. It seems I'll have to re-bag it so it can be collected in a fortnight :(

Is Swansea Council alone in this pedantry, or is this colour bar widespread?

  • We've had this for the last 4 years. Just buy the cheap bin bags or ones at pound land.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Crazy! I hope they don't start that here, my rubbish goes in dog food sacks, or other domestic animal food sacks, paper for paper waste and recylables and plastic for non recyclables. It would be shame to make more rubbish to comply with a rule on colour.

where I live the will only take rubbish if its in an official council supplied black bag with the council logo on it. They wont take black bags bought from the supermarket or any other colour bag.

Cardiff is the same, if it won't fit in a council black sack then you can get it collected by arrangement (usually for free, sometimes for a nominal sum). Similarly with the garden waste sacks - you have to use them but if something (eg branches) won't fit in then you can arrange a special collection.
I asked about this and apparently it's a response to a minority of the public who were putting out all sorts in ridiculous and varied containers. The binmen are on a very tight schedule and can't be taking the time to double check every little thing, so they are told not to make any exceptions to the regulation bags and bins.
It seems mad in some ways but I'd rather take responsibility for using the correct (and supplied) bags than pay more Council Tax.

    Thankfully we have Wheely bins.

As long as there is not two much weight in it, you can get rid of "anything" in it.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

Its same in my area although most people have wheelie bins accept maybe some flats. I would have thought using black bags would be better as they tend to be most common in shops. I cant knock my council for refuse they been fine although we have alternative weeks recycling one week and waste food other we managed fine with family of 4

My council (Redcar and Cleveland) have taken away our reusuable recycling sacks and now we have to pay £2 for 50 clear bin bags with the council logo on them. So we have to buy plastic bags to put our plastic waste into ... crazy!
