My mother in laws MX5 had brakes as an advisory 4 years ago. They havent been changed but for the last 3 years they havent been an advisory either. As said thats a good one to try and get more money from you.

If in doubt have a look yourself, the standard alloys on the MX5 allow good access to look at the disks. Or just jack it up and remove the wheels to have a good look yourself.

In a private sale, the seller is not allowed to lie. Ad says one lady owner, and it seems it was verbally said that they had owned it from new. These are lies.
6 month old advisory on brake discs means they should have been replaced already probably, but I'd just suck that up TBH, £300 ish on a £6,000 is fine if that's all you have to do.
Immaculate condition? Hmm, I guess someone could look at a car with nice shiny wheels, bodywork and interior and say it's immaculate, and there might be no engine, but immaculate on a 7yr old car is not the sale as on a new one. I think the only recourse you have is on the 1 owner thing, and if you still like the car, see if they'll give you a discount?

If someone states a car is immaculate your first question should be "At what distance?"

If the response is "at 100 yards through thick fog" then perhaps move along

Might not be such a lie if it's been owned within one family that whole time, driven by one person, but ownership was transferred around to make insurance easier to obtain, maybe?

    Exactly.
The name on the V5 is the registered keeper, which is not always the same as the owner.
I've been registered keeper on plenty of V5's of company vehicles which certainly don't belong to me.

My last car was a dealer demonstrator for 3 months before the previous owner bought it. That meant 2 previous, however the lady told me she had it since new. I did the digging and found out why there were 2.

Pitting discs are a non-problem these days. Drive the car already.

Nope, 1 owner is shorthand to me for 1 registered owner. I'd expect 1 person to be on the V5, and would accept a dealership too, but that's it. If it's been in a family, you could state that, and it would count positively that it's been within the family from new. Also Strider, post #21 - 'Mommy'?!

To be precise as well - the adverts say's 'one lady owner' it doesn't say that there haven't been any male owners though!!
If I have helped in any way, and you feel like it - please press the thanks button

This was the advert for a car that we have just purchased.

2005 55 Reg Mazda MX-5 2.0i 2dr ConvertibleOne lady owner, Full Mazda service history, Always garaged, Remote central locking, Alarm and Immobiliser, Electric windows, Electric mirrors, CD player, Driver and passenger airbags, Wind deflector, Tax/MOT October 2012, Immaculate condition, Very reluctant sale.£5,999

The V5 document has just come back from DVLA and it says that there were three previous owners. We were told by the wifes husband that she had owned the car from new, also the MOT was not present and would be sent on to us as the garage had forgotten to leave it in the car. When the MOT arrived it was issued with advisory warnings regarding front and rear discs. They are both pitted and need replacing at considerable cost, hardly immaculate then.Do I have any form of redress I can take or have I been shafted.Any help would be appreciated.:(

    What V5 do you have?

The V5C that I have for my vehicle only specifies the current and previous registered keepers (and number of former keepers) and specifically notes "THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP, It shows who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle"

Edit: ... and MOT advisories are just that, an advice.
It won't say the discs need replacing, because if they were so badly pitted that they needed replacement then the vehicle would have failed when examined in September/October 2011.
Note that an MOT is only a certificate of condition at the time of examination ... it could well be that 6 months on, the discs do now need replacement but you as the buyer should have made the necessary checks (e.g. by employing a professional to carry out a vehicle examination) to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the vehicle before you agreed to purchase it.

I've owned about 12 new cars over the years and i've always been the only keeper on the V5.

Yeah, however if you are buying something pre-reg you will be the second keeper however to all intents and purposes its a new car. Most people would spy this when they see the previous keepers with the first one being a garage. I suspect this would have no real impact on value as it would had it been an owner who had used the car.

I would never misrepresent but I would also expect anyone buying the car to ask about it!

I'm sorry but I havn't got a clue what you are on about 'pre-reg'?

My current V5C shows 'Previous Registered Keepers = NONE'. The car was registered to me, not the dealer who sold it. Thats how its always been from my dozen or so experiences.

So when I sell my car, I can confidently advertise it as having only 'One Owner'. In the OP's case, if the car was advertised as having one owner, then the V5C should say the same as mine as far as previous keepers are concerned. I suppose there can be a bit of confusion if the seller bought the car as an ex-demmo, then it would indeed show the original selling dealer as the previous keeper.
